Big Willie should have won the Golden Boot

The award is given to the best player in a given year. The player who has accomplished the most at all levels. So all that considered, how did Webcke and Lockyer get nominated and Willie not?

Willie was great for the Doggies all year. He was in the top 3 players in the Origin series. The best player in the finals series. And the Churchill medallist too.

Reading all the debate about Farrell being awarded the Golden Boot got me thinking of other candidates and the only ones i could think of were Willie and Hindmarsh but Mason was the clear stand-out (because of the finals series and Origin). If the award was given after the tri-nations he would have had more merit too because he was fantastic throughout for Australia.

So my vote would have gone to Big Willie. One of the top two forwards in the world.

Good post smith. i agree through and through.

however another debate can be put forward for andrew ryan.. he has had a phenominal season and is regarded as our most consistent best forward.. taking out the player of the year award for us and most likely to be named captain.

imo the canterbury side is going to fire next year again anyway.. with both our second rowers capable of being able to've taken out the golden boot award.

cant wait for

8. omeley
10. asotasi
11. mason
12. ryan
13. williams

what a scary prospect!

Both Williams and Asotasi in the startine line-up...here's hoping you suffer Penrith syndrome and lose the edge you had with that awesome bench we saw this year.

But back on the topic, Ryan is certainly up there but Mason had a full Origin series behind him as well as the crowning glory - the Churchill Medal...which Ryan himself was very close to winning btw.

Has any one player had as consistent a impact on almost every game they have played this year?

Good question, I think not.

That being said, it would be a promotional nightmare if Willie won it...sadly a lot fo people can't see past his exploits on the front page and never quite get to the back page

How much has Big Willie turnes his career around!!

Pre-Origin he was a complete liability to the game now look at him!!!

Shows the sharpness of a mother's tongue. Perhaps she can now talk to any of the other wayward stars!

I was fairly annoyed with Mason at the start of the year, and I wouldn't have complained if the Dogs had shown him the door. It's unreal how he as turned it around. He would be worthy of the player of the year award!!

As fpr hoping that we suffer "Penrith Syndrome", hope not!!! We still have Grimaldi and Maitua who are work-hourses in our pack. So im not too sure what our starting line up will look like!

Surely SBW will force his way into the starting line-up wont he? It wouldnt surprise me if Mason starts in the front row with SBW in the second row with Ryan, Grimaldi at lock and Asotasi still on the bench.

SBW sure does deserve a starting spot. But who knows which way Folkes will go. Your suggestion is certainly an opption, im just hoping that we get an impact off our bench

Yeah well i won't be surprised if you turn your latest batch of Parra 'rejects' (their names have slipped my mind, Armit maybe is one of them?) into superstars ala Willie Tonga.

Chris and Nathan Armit. Apparently there are really huge wraps on the 2 both of them from the a few of the parra supporters i've spoken to. So, Maybe so!

Also signed some dude from the Broncos - another forward - Ben Czislowski who apparently has a bit of talent.

I've havn't seen anything of any of them. So, I could be wrong.

Despite not liking the Doggies you have to recognise their set up and in particluar Folkesy for being a shrewd operator.

Willie Mason - Golden Boot
Why is it so funny? Name someone who has accomplished more in 2004. Only Hindmarsh and to a lesser extent Buderus come close in the NRL.

I would Put O'Meley in that category IF Bennet had put him in the Starting line up from the start like he deserved.

Yep Hindmarsh would be my first choice but Id also rate Fitler, Rauhihi, Price, Rooney, El Mazri, Utai, Pulatua

Big Willie deserves to win the 2004 Golden Boot .... up the arse.....

However its good to see that he seems to have put some of his earlier off field antics behind him, and concentrated on playing some good footy in the second half of the season....
