Biggest Buyers

If there was a stat done over say the last 15-20 years of which club has bought the most players, who would it be?

I dare say my top 3 are:
Bulldogs
Roosters
Manly

Dogs appear to be hell bent on buying and always do, which goes against there years of Propaganda being a family club.

For example, in a matter of weeks rumored to have made moves for mateo, keating, inu, and now Merrin and Henry from Stgeorge.

As always they offer overs to get these players, what is it with the mentality of some clubs?

Well thats the future of the game really. You lock up your priorities and the rest you hope you can keep.

The Dragons would have to be the least active in the market over the last 10-15 yrs

up until last year i dont think we would have even bought what you would call a stand out 1st grader

Not many regular first graders. Most were either end of their career, journeymen or nuffies.

Lets see who the big names are that the Roosters signed over the past 10 years:

2000

- Craig Wing (wasn't a rep player yet, talented young half at Souths)
- Craig Fitzgibbon (wasn't a rep player yet, talented utility forward at Dragons)
- Ian Rubin (average Souths prop)
- Luke Phillips (average NRL drifter)

2001

- Paul Green (halfback from NQLD Cowboys)
- Adrian Morley (marquee signing, Great Britain rep prop)

2002

- Jason Cayless (wasn't a rep player yet, talented interchange forward at Eels)
- Brett Mullins (aging winger picked up as value buy for experience)
- Justin Hodges (wasn't a rep player yet, talented young centre at Broncos)
- Chad Robinson (solid utility interchange forward at Eels)
- David Kidwell (average NRL drifter, Eels + ESL)

2003

- Chris Walker (marquee signing, highly talented Broncos outside back)
- Brett Finch (talented young Raiders halfback)
- Ned Catic (average Panthers interchange prop)
- Todd Payten (average Raiders interchange prop)
- Eric Grothe (talented young Eels outside back)

2004

- Steve Crouch (average Eels fringe first grade forward)
- Luke Dorn (average Manly halfback)
- Gavin Lester (average Bulldogs fringe first grade winger)

2005

- Amos Roberts (very talented Panthers winger)
- Joel Monaghan (very talented Raiders centre)
- Brett Firman (average Dragons fringe first grade halfback)
- Richard Fa'aoso (average Panthers fringe first grade prop)

2006

- Braith Anasta (marquee signing, Bulldogs five-eighth)
- Mark Edmondson (average ESL prop)
- Ashley Harrison (marquee signing, Souths lock)
- Glenn Hall (average Souths fringe first grade prop)
- Vince Mellars (average Sharks fringe first grade winger)
- Charlie Tonga (average Bulldogs fringe first grade prop)

2007

- Danny Nutley (experienced Sharks + ESL prop)
- Nate Myles (marquee signing, Bulldogs forward)
- Chris Beattie (average old Sharks + ESL prop)
- John Williams (average Eels fringe first grade winger)

2008

- Mark O'Meley (marquee signing, Bulldogs prop)
- Willie Mason (marquee signing, Bulldogs forward)
- James Aubusson (highly talented young Storm hooker)
- Riley Brown (average Knights fringe first grader)
- Brent Grose (average ESL outside back)

2009

- Nick Kouparitsas (average Bulldogs fringe first grader)
- Jordan Tansey (average ESL utility player)

2010

- Todd Carney (marquee signing, Raiders outside back/half)
- Jason Ryles (marquee signing, experienced Dragons + ESL prop)
- Phil Graham (experienced and fast Raiders centre)
- Daniel Conn (average Titans fringe first grade forward)

What that shows is that most of the Roosters signings have actually been pretty average fringe first graders. The marquee signings of note since 2000 are Morley, Walker, Roberts, Monaghan, Anasta, Harrison, Myles, O'Meley, Mason, Carney and Ryles. Finch, Wing, Hodges, Graham and Fitzgibbon had experience before coming to us, but weren't really huge $$$ signings at the time.

You do realise, that in the sense of "a first grader moving to another club", both the Roosters and Dragons would be roughly even since 2000.

I don't think that any of those players were at their peak when they signed for the Dragons.

Melbourne Storm, just for arguements sake

2001
Matt Orford - Swapped for Kimmorley really, signed for peanuts
Paul Wahituira - came from Warriors never really did much at Melbourne

2002
Willie Leyshon - good player, nothing special
Shane Walker - another average player
Kirk Reynoldson - most still remember this guy

2003
David Kidwell - Drifter, eventually made a name for himself
Andrew McFadden - average
Nathan Friend - couldnt get a start at Brisbane, always a bench player
Matt King - Sharks reserve grade bench player at 23
Cooper Cronk - Talented junior wallaby

2004
Alex Chan - good player, injury prone
Ben MacDougall - turned out ok but name made famous by his older brother
Steve Turner - very talented Penrith junior, couldnt get a start behind Wesser

2005
Dennis Scott - ok signing at the time
Jamie Feeney - potential to be better but didnt play much
Brett White - couldnt get a start at Dragons
Ian Donnelly - drifter
Jamie McDonald - another drifter
Tevita Metuisela - who?

2006
Michael Crocker - first big signing since Kearney in 99
Garrett Crossman - talented Penrith junior, bench player at best
Chris Walker - handed a lifeline, never did much though
Ben Cross - starting prop at Raiders, good signing
Jeff Lima - no one wanted this guy, found playing in France somewhere

2007
Clint Newton - Country rep player
Anthony Quinn - Country rep player
Russell Aitken - talented Cronulla junior, never lived up to potential

2008
Clifford Manua - fringe
Brett Anderson - was retired when signed

2009
Brett Finch - big name signing but on the outer at the time

2010
Luke MacDougall - Fringe player
Chase Stanley - talented young international
John Kite - talented young prop
Todd Lowrie - good first grader

So really, not many big name signings, but in saying that 98% arent/werent Melbourne juniors.
Crocker, Finch, Newton, Quinn and Lowrie are the biggest names (at the time)
Obviously there were more but mostly unknown at the time and not worth mentioning
