BIRD TO STAY AT SHARKS UNTIL 2009
20.06.06 12:14 Age: 16 min
The Sharks have announced the re-signing of forward Greg Bird to a new three year contract. The new deal will see Bird, who has been in devastating form for the Sharks, remain at the club at least until the end of the 2009 season.
Sharks Chief Executive Greg Pierce was pleased to have secured Birds signature on a contract, especially in light of the interest being shown from a number of rival clubs.
Greg has begun to show the form we have always known he has been capable of and we see him as being a big part of our future plans here at the Sharks, Pierce said. He is only 22 and is best football is still in front of him. Were more than happy to have secured his services for the next three years.
Bird was somewhat relieved to have his future confirmed and is intent on helping the Sharks continue their push towards a premiership title.
We have a good young squad here at the Sharks and Im pleased Ill be a part of it for the next few years, he said. Im comfortable here at Cronulla and keen to help the club to continue to build towards what we all hope could be something special.
Since cementing a berth in the starting side as a back rower in recent weeks, Bird has proved to be a thorn in the side of the Sharks opponents during the past month, with his strong running and bruising defense. A former Junior Kangaroo captain, he has arguably been the Sharks best in wins over the Cowboys and Sea Eagles in their past two encounters.
Bird joined the Sharks from Maitland back in 2001, making his first grade debut in a round seven match against the Bulldogs in 2002. He has played a total of 63 NRL matches for the Sharks and has scored 19 tries and kicked four goals in those games.
