Greg Bird has been convicted and fined $2,500 for lying to police about how his girlfriend was injured at their Sydney home last year.
Bird was convicted of glassing his girlfriend Katie Milligan at their home 14 months ago.
He was sentenced to at least eight months jail, but he served none of that because his lawyers challenged the conviction.
Two weeks ago they won after Ms Milligan testified, saying it was an accident.
Bird was back at Downing Centre Local Court today to deal with the last of the charges, one of public mischief.
That relates to the lie that he told police shortly after the incident, when he blamed his flatmate.
The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to that and his lawyer Chris Nyst today argued that he did not mean for his friend to get in trouble.
He spent close to an hour arguing that Bird is a man of good character who has been through enough.
The magistrate fined the newly-signed Titans player $2,500, but he said he could not let him get away without a criminal record.

$2,500 wouldn't even break the bank of the average person letalone someone like him. He would cop a bigger fine from the club if he done something wrong that wasn't illegal.

How much did that judge get for lying about a speeding fine??

Surely falsely accusing someone of assault and lying about it in court is worse?

Either way, I eagerly await the NRL's de-registration of Bird. I mean, they booted Carney for essentially just being a drunk.

I don't want to come across as a forum cop but there's already a thread regarding Greg Bird's off field BS.

I don't mind there being 2 Greg Bird threads... I'm more sick of the 15 million independent commission threads...

so how will the NRL respond? Do they have a sliding scale of illegal activities and punishments? Worse we have seen players punted for is assaulting a woman, least drink driving. Wonder how the rate lying to police to cover up a "non crime"?

Surely this can only add credibility to Bird and Milligan's "she was attacking me not the other way round" tale right?

Wonder what part this charge played in him signing for Titans?

May have made it impossible for him to play in UK and actually cost him the 500K reportedly offered to him by Catalans as opposed to 100k rumoured with Titans?

That's a good call I reckon... for him it was a case of a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and I suppose it exemplifies why people in stone houses shouldn't throw glasses.

no wouldn't have mattered to him playing for a French club. they are less discerning who they let work in their country!

Convictions weren't recorded. It's not on his official record, bar for considerations such as sentencing if he ever faces further charges. No one is obligated to disclose this charge for the purposes of a Visa application. So I doubt it would have any impact. He could probably play in the UK if he wanted too.

Scum. Let history show that Greg Bird didn't glass his girlfriend intentionally but was happy for a 'mate' to take the fall for what is apparently an excusable action on his behalf. That's what anyone who has worked in the CJS would call a 'dog'

I was hoping that ths might be enough to get Searle to come to his senses and cancel the contract, but no. Looks like I'm going to have to stock up on rotten fruit after all...

The stupidy of Bird astounds me. I just cant believe someone could be so stupid. Why on earth would he have tried to blame it on his mate when he wasnt even home at the time. Why would he even lie in the first place, according to a judges findings the "glassing" was an accident so why not just tell the truth from the get go. If he did, he would still be on a nice cushy contract with the sharks & probably just returned from the four nations tour. His manager also needs to take a long hard look at himself. He must of given Bird some piss poor advice on this.

Don't forget the bears or expansion threads.......

On topic though, bit of a joke..... But so has the whole situation, I am pretty much shockproof.
