GC needs hospital before stadium: Springborg

Gold Coast residents should have access to a bed in a hospital before a seat in an AFL stadium, Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg says.
Campaigning on the Gold Coast on Wednesday, Mr Springborg said he would unashamedly pursue health as a priority over the stadium announced by Premier Anna Bligh on Monday.
Ms Bligh said the government would go further into debt to build a $130 million AFL stadium for 23,000 patrons.
Mr Springborg said the stadium would put the state further into debt, at a time when Labor was not providing for the future health needs of the fast growing Gold Coast.
"This might cause some people to vote a different way," he told reporters.
"But the simple reality (is) when it comes to healthcare versus seats in a football stadium then the LNP will choose healthcare and the needs of the Gold Coast in the future."
But two Gold Coast Liberal National Party MPs have come out in favour of the stadium, which would create jobs in construction and boost the region's tourist industry.
The LNP will need to make major gains on the Gold Coast to win power on March 21.
