Just to show my colours up front, I'm an Eels supporter with a fondness for the Rabbitohs. Just so no one accuses me a of Knights bias. This is just what I think would be the best team based on form and strategic imperatives.
1. Kurt Gidley
2. Jaryd Hayne
3. Mark Gasnier
4. Matt Cooper
5. Amos Roberts (My bolter, just ahead of Anthony Quinn.)
6. Greg Bird
7. Jarrod Mullen
8. Brent Kite
9. Danny Buderus (Michael Ennis - Shadow)
10. Brett White (Ray Cashmere - Shadow)
11. Anthony Laffranchi
12. Paul Gallen
13. Anthony Tupou
14. Braith Anasta
15. Willie Mason
16. Mark O'Meley
17. Andrew Ryan
Brett Stewart might feel unlucky missing out to Gidley, but Gids is the form NSW fullback and offers the most in terms of versatility - easy back up half back and hooker. Additionally, he can carve up Queensland with dummy half runs in the crucial stages of the game, as he does for Newcastle ... plus you get the advantage of established combinations with 1, 7 and 9.
Cooper is definitely down on form, but I believe experience and established combinations work in his favour and gives him a slight edge. It's amazing that pickings are so slim for NSW in the centre three-quarters. Arguably Gasnier (and maybe Hayne, although that could just be my bias) is the only in-form elite quality centre-winger for NSW. Compare that to the other crowd.
As much as I hate Anasta, he deserves a spot and he is experienced and versatile ... you don't need a second hooker in squad with Gidley and Bird both capable of switching in a pinch. Gidley to hooker and Hayne to fullback, just means Anasta could spend some time in the centres.
Edit - Oops. Got busy at work and took too long to post. WOW, some surprises in there. Hornby over Gidley is fookin' bonkers. The official team is a lot smaller than mine too. Where's the beef? Crazy.
