Bomb v Grubber

I still don’t get why do most team including the Dragons go for bombs close to the line rather than grubbers? If the catch the bomb on the full in their goal area it is a 20m tap where as if you grubber you get a better chance of another set.

Bomb – Best case scenario try, worst case 20m tap or tackled in the air penalty. In order to get a good crack you need to either kick the ball just oustide the goal line which gives you not much room for error.

Grubber – Best case scenario try, worst case team dives on the ball and they start their set close to their line (not 20m). Other scenario is tackle the opposition in goal which gives the attackers another crack at them.

There is a 80/20 chance of getting a good outcome where as with the bomb it is more 50/50 (actually more like 30/70).

Inside the 10m range grubber to me is best case, 10-20m range the cross field kick or "banana kick" beyond the 20m preferably bomb, but I love seeing the chip and chase.

Putting the ball in the air gives the chasers time to meet the ball at the defenders.

The grubber is only good if you are on a roll and have momentum in attack and can chase through and put pressure on the defenders.

It shouldn't be a case of which play is best. These days, more than ever, it is important to use variety in attack. Kicks and running plays are necessary to keep the defensive team guessing. Personally I believe the kick is overused in rugby league these days, particularly by Jamie Soward. Then I'm old fashioned, I liked the 5 meter rule with deep, sweeping backline moves.

I reckon there is a lot of times, the grubber would be better then the high ball.It really is a matter, of the kicker having the grubber, in his bag of tricks. From 20m out, the grubber is probably more effective, in regards to trapping the opposition in goal. From any less then 20, it becomes a matter of trying to thread it through all the legs, of the opposition. If it bounces back, towards your own goal line, the opposition can pounce on it and quite easily make 50, 60 metres or even score a length of the field try.

The bomb was pretty effective for us on Sunday tbh... picked up a couple of repeat sets and the Scott no-try should have been a try, Sailor didn't knock it on.

I've found myself wondering the exact same thing this season. As a recent as a few seasons ago, the grubber into the in-goal was a regular option for most teams on the end of attacking sets, as a good kick chase would give you a good chance of pinning the back 3 in the in-goal and forcing a repeat set, which allows you to build pressure.

For a team that has prided itself on 'building pressure', we sure do put a lot of balls in the air on the end of attacking sets. I'd love to see Sowie start rolling them in on the 5th tackle. With our high completion rates and inpenetrable defense we could practically camp in the opposition 40m.

Glad your not a ref. If it comes off the oppositions legs, it is play on. If it comes off the oppositions torso or head, it will still be deemed play on. As was stated with the grubber, the kicker is trying to thread it between their legs.

Don't know if your on the pisstake or not but fairdinkum you got it dreadfully wrong.

What Jonesy said will do me.

It was groundhog day on Sunday, cross field kick, cross field kick, cross field kick. What was the score again?? What was the possession flow in the first half hour??

all this chatter is exciting me! If anyone can make the adjustments we need based on a strong but predictable performance against Paramatta, its Bennett, lets hope we can bounce back with an angry vengeance.

Fien's attacking kicking game is pretty bad even warriors fans tried to warn us about it, he should leave the kicking in the oppositions 20 to our halves.

Also I miss Soward's chip and chase where has it gone?

Chip & Chases scare me though, you do see the odd Soward, Marshall or Lockyer one come off, but unless your the shiznit chipping master, or its do or die, im not sure its ever a smart % play.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say Sowie's chip&chase has been a very high percentage play this year, close to 100% in fact.
