Ok give it up, you know exactly what I meant.
He should have taken Mary’s job when he won the NSW cup and the Interstate cup, the year he replaced Mary for a round or two while Mary was out with his sick mother and had us performing out of our skins.
If I recall correctly, wash JD already gone when Mary took time off?

And even if he was here, what says it was Demetrou having us perform ‘out of our skins’? Have a look at our performance start of this year (out of skins) vs now (very much in skins) Same team, same coach..

One or two matches is no measure of success.. after all, Steve Price was first grade coach when we won the WCC....

FFS.
2014 he won the Qld Cup and the State Chapionship with the Nth Pride.
2015 he was assistant to Paul Green when the Cowboys won the title.
2016 he was appointed Cutters coach, he then won the NSW Cup and the state championship.
During 2016 from round 17 to round 22 we were on a five game losing streak, amid a pretty dismal year.
In round 22 we played Cronulla, premiers a few weeks later, we came out and our previously pop gun attack beat them 32-18.
It was widely reported that Mary was out for the week with his sick mother and JD was the full time coach for the week.
The next week, with Mary back in charge we got flogged 42-6 by the Roosters.

Clear things up?

Appreciate the google skills.

But he’s still a rookie 1st grade coach.

To summarise your argument:
- He has won titles in the lower grades
- He has an assistant coach premiers ring
- He has won the only game he was in charge of the big boys
- He is an understudy to Bennett.

The exact same can be said for this guy before he took over:

Walters as head coach, big Mal more just for moral like when he coached QLD

This isn’t particularly scientific I admit - but whenever I see either of them in the coaches box during origin I get the impression they don’t know what the f**k they are doing.

They seem to be good at organising team bonding drinks - but we already have a coach that does that.

How many state cups did the Cronulla water boy win?
How many Interstate cups did he win?
Was he ever an assistant Premiership winning coach?

Better judges than me said in 2016, with his record of getting his teams to perform, he was next cab of the rank to be a first grade coach. It was the reason Bennett poached him to Brisbane.

As for the google skills, I didn’t need them.
I was at the Cronulla game with a good mate who is a sharks supporter, and when he asked where all this attacking prowess had suddenly come from when we couldn’t score a try all year to save our lives, I told him it was due to Mary being out for the week and JD taking over.

Not sure if this picture has ever made it up to this forum before, but who’s the guy in blue?

But of course, after his dismal failure in the top gig he also managed to sneak his way into this picture too..

Some people are awesome assistants who work well with a good mentor..

We will gloss over the fact he’s won two state and two interstate titles as a HEAD coach and concentrate on the fact that Steve Price was water boy for two premiership winning teams shall we?

But we have an unsuccessful one that doors that, clearly can't handle his piss.

I would do a Mr Bennett coach and JD assistant package. Wayne 2 years & JD assistant.
Followed by a guarantee 2 years coach to JD and Wayne coaching director.

Win win for everybody particularly us members and fans

Don’t get your knickers in a twist.

I found it more pertinent that you were so busy singing the praises of an opposition assistant coach but didn’t even know that price has a premiership to his name from this club.

But if you do want to compare non first grade roles, our mate pricey also won the 2005 under 21s as head coach. Arguably a tougher gig to win as you have less ability to recruit the team you want due to the age limit.

But yes, winning the state comp is a wonderful achievement and puts JD amongst that elite coaching group of household names including Garth Brennan, Greg Matterson and the Walker bros..

This I can live with. The coaching director peice is what we’ve been missing with the rookie coaches..

Well Boyd isn't going to endorse Walters who left the Broncos and then left Boyd out of the Origin team, prompting early rep retirement

I did in fact know Price was an “assistant coach” but as you pointed out with your particularly insightful photo, the “bloke in the blue shirt” was wearing said blue shirt because he was running on the feild to ensure the players stayed hydrated, a job he later repeated with Cronulla, with great success I might add.

Plus as I have pointed out that “opposition” assistant coach should have had a fair crack at being our assistant first grade coach with a view to making him our head coach.
But Mary’s ego and his inability to see talent in anyone who isn’t his mate robbed us of that opportunity and instead we ended up with Ben Hornby and Dean Young as part of this woeful “jobs for the boys” approach our club has taken for the last 25 years, with the notable exception of 2009-2011.
Remind me again what happened during the middle one of those years?

So what we should do, by your reasoning, is not try any coach who has not first grade success.
It’s lucky Souths, Cronulla, Roosters and the Cowboys didn’t have that attitude.
Or Melbourne for that matter, was Bellemy never an assistant coach?

You’re getting awfully hot under the collar over an opposition team..

My recommendation was mentioned a few posts back, but to reiterate, a rookie coach should be partnered with a coaching director.

This would have seen Brown shine, and may even have helped Price.

I don’t get hot under the collar, this isn’t real life it’s an Internet forum.
However, the idea that anything could have helped Price or Brown become a decent coach is delusional.
Next you’ll be telling me Mary just needs the chance to prove himself.

There is nothing more JD could have done to show he was ready to take Mary's spot. It is not as if Mary had a good year then? Missed opportunity. If JD was made coach then, I bet Saints are on 36 points after 2 wins against Warriors, Win against Tigers and Souths and on the way to Minor Premiers. Wasted opportunity that came back and bit us
