Because those who saw him play would say he is one of the best footballers to ever play the game because he was. But his name is rarely mentioned alongside guys like Coote for example. How?
He broke his femur (thigh bone which is the biggest in the body) in 1996 and was never really the same after that.
I also don't recall any other players breaking that bone.
^Ah yes, in that case I agree with you.
I feel the media in NSW made Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler out to be the greatest players of all time during the SL era, and pushed Daley, Clyde, Stuart and co. into the background when they were still on another level to the aforementioned 2. I remember the media pushing new Kangaroo captain Fittler as the world's best player in 95, when he was clearly behind Daley as a 5/8. Daley in particular was robbed of 3 years of his rep career in his prime, and that affects his overall standing in the game's history.
Ricky Stuart would have further cemented his place as the best NSW 7 all time in 1995 with a 4th straight series victory. QLD had no answers to Daley Stuart as halves combo.
I'm slightly biased, but that's the best halves combo I've seen...at any level.
The most annoying thing about that GF is the all the wraps Sattler gets for that tackle on Byrne. The Panthers player that ankle tapped Byrne deserves more credit, without that Salttler doesn't get close
I would have Daley Stuart over any other combo.
Were News Limited the only media organization in Australia in the mid 90s?..Did they run Channel 9 btw?
Even above Cronk/Thurston, Thurston/Lockyer?
So Channel 9 is the only media organization in Australia? Didn't realise they owned news papers, or radio stations.....
Anyway, we are going off topic which is Clyde v Burgess. I think we both agree on that one that Clyde leaves Burgess for dead
Both were exceptional players, thats for sure. I rated them very very highly.
I remember Daley's confidence was such that he rated himself a goalkicker at Origin level when he was a 19 year old. I think his miss from 15m out ranks as one of the all time worst attempts, and set the tone for NSW to be flogged in Game 1 of the 1989 series.
Lesser players would have struggled to recover from such a flogging, but it was like water off a ducks back to him.

f**k some people are dribblers. And he said as much, but then he said "I'm still gonna take it". This, unless I'm mistaken, was a reference to Michael Potter's Dally M speech a few nights before. Clyde should have, in his speech, acknowledged that a mistake had been made and that Alexander or Simmons deserved the medal much more than him. That would have engendered respect.
