Yeah I can't agree about the tarnished reputation due to Super League. I don't really think anyone's reputation was tarnished.

How?

He broke his femur (thigh bone which is the biggest in the body) in 1996 and was never really the same after that.

I also don't recall any other players breaking that bone.
Because those who saw him play would say he is one of the best footballers to ever play the game because he was. But his name is rarely mentioned alongside guys like Coote for example.

He isnt the only Raider to suffer that fate.

^Ah yes, in that case I agree with you.

I feel the media in NSW made Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler out to be the greatest players of all time during the SL era, and pushed Daley, Clyde, Stuart and co. into the background when they were still on another level to the aforementioned 2. I remember the media pushing new Kangaroo captain Fittler as the world's best player in 95, when he was clearly behind Daley as a 5/8. Daley in particular was robbed of 3 years of his rep career in his prime, and that affects his overall standing in the game's history.

Ricky Stuart would have further cemented his place as the best NSW 7 all time in 1995 with a 4th straight series victory. QLD had no answers to Daley Stuart as halves combo.

Really? The media in NSW pushed them eh? During the height of the Super League War?! I can really see New Ltd pushing players from its rivals to the forefront during that period

I'm slightly biased, but that's the best halves combo I've seen...at any level.

Were News Limited the only media organization in Australia in the mid 90s?..Did they run Channel 9 btw?

So Channel 9 is the only media organization in Australia? Didn't realise they owned news papers, or radio stations.....

Anyway, we are going off topic which is Clyde v Burgess. I think we both agree on that one that Clyde leaves Burgess for dead :)

Even above Cronk/Thurston, Thurston/Lockyer?

Yes, and it's not even close. Both Thurston and Lockyer are/were very average in defence. Whereas Laurie Daley used to cave forwards' rib-cages in with his tackles. Stuart had a better kicking and passing game than any of the 3 you mentioned, and Daley had a better running game than all 3 of those men. Daley & Stuart were the perfectly balanced combination. Stuart, the genius organizer who changed the game with his skills, and Daley the athletically gifted running and hard hitting 5/8 who could also ball play and kick if Stuart was pressured. They were also both great leaders and battled for the captaincy of the Raiders in 95 after Mal's retirement. Interestingly at the time, it went to Stuart even though Daley was NSW captain and the obvious choice for Kangaroo captain.

I didn't see Sterling/Kenny in their prime, but Stuart and Daley were outplaying them by 91, and went on to give NSW some credibility at Origin level. The Stuart/Daley combo was actually first put in place by Jack Gibson in 1990 as Daley was still playing centre at club level, but was picked at 5/8 for NSW outside of Stuart who debuted that year.

Just listen to the amount of current players who state Stuart and Daley as their inspiration growing up. Johnathan Thurston himself is in that category.

Both were exceptional players, thats for sure. I rated them very very highly.

I remember Daley's confidence was such that he rated himself a goalkicker at Origin level when he was a 19 year old. I think his miss from 15m out ranks as one of the all time worst attempts, and set the tone for NSW to be flogged in Game 1 of the 1989 series.

Lesser players would have struggled to recover from such a flogging, but it was like water off a ducks back to him.

We're basically saying the same thing but in reverse lol. OK I'll amend my comment to say certain sections of the NSW media promoted those aforementioned players as better than their SL counterparts, who had provided the game with it's star power in the years previous.

LOL Daley made an atrocious goal kick attempt in both his Origin and Test debuts. Needless to say he didn't go on to be one of the games great goal-kickers. He couldn't even steal the job from Meninga the toe-poker.

And he said as much, but then he said "I'm still gonna take it". This, unless I'm mistaken, was a reference to Michael Potter's Dally M speech a few nights before. Clyde should have, in his speech, acknowledged that a mistake had been made and that Alexander or Simmons deserved the medal much more than him. That would have engendered respect.
f**k some people are dribblers.

Clyde has already got respect from everyone who knew him as a player including Alexander and Simmons.

And back in those days the CC medalist didnt give a speech.
