Brad Clyde vs Sam Burgess - then vs now

Most locks these days are either workhorses, or power locks with the odd ball player here and there. Clyde was a workhorse AND a power lock at the same time. He could also run like the wind, and run around fullbacks etc. like Menzies. He was truly the first and probably last of his kind.

clyde by a mile. great speed, balance, work rate....if he was wearing gps in his day he would have chalked up a lot of km's in a game....and a lot of meters on attack....burgess would be a lumbering oaf in comparason

Only special to most, not all, Penrith were a 3 game better team than any other that year . . . whatever happened after the Shield is just media fodder

Even more to the point Penrith played better than they actually were themselves.
This is actually a compliment, that year they played well above their weight and deserved the premiership.

The most annoying thing about that GF is the all the wraps Sattler gets for that tackle on Byrne. The Panthers player that ankle tapped Byrne deserves more credit, without that Salttler doesn't get close

One of us has his wires crossed unless you're talking about 2 gf's. '91 Penrith were 3 games better than the rest and Sattler's '03 they were 1 game better

reading this thread and seeing all the debate about the 91 cc medal and whether he deserved, isn't it all a moot point. He has a spare anyway

Raper, Coote, Price, Pearce, Clyde.

All great locks.

Could never understand why the Dogs sacked him as Football Manager back in 2008.

And also Todd Byrne wasn't known for pace and he was stumbling as well. But it was still a great tackle by Sattler.

Clyde is one of the greats. His legacy is tarnished by super league like many others.

How?

He broke his femur (thigh bone which is the biggest in the body) in 1996 and was never really the same after that.

I also don't recall any other players breaking that bone.

Yep, he was a shell of his former self at the Dogs.

Just like Burgess has been at the level of Ben Czislowski since his return from rugger.

He was picked for NSW in 1999 but fell of a horse. I imagine he was going well enough.

He did look pretty embarrassed to receive it iirc.
And he said as much, but then he said "I'm still gonna take it". This, unless I'm mistaken, was a reference to Michael Potter's Dally M speech a few nights before. Clyde should have, in his speech, acknowledged that a mistake had been made and that Alexander or Simmons deserved the medal much more than him. That would have engendered respect.

He was still one of the best back rowers in the game, for sure.

But he was nowhere near the player he was at the Raiders, where he would regularly play the role of a ball player and had a short kicking game that most halves would envy. His cover defense and kick chase was extraordinary also.

At the Dogs he became more of a workhorse.
