Bulldogs re-sign Goodwin and recruit Micky Paea, Junior Tia Kilifi for 2010

By staff writers
August 13, 2009

The Bulldogs have continued their stellar season by announcing a number of key recruits for 2010, highlighted by the re-signing of in-form winger Bryson Goodwin.

The club moved quickly to upgrade Goodwin's contract, which will see him remain at the club until the end of 2011.

Goodwin has scored 18 tries in just his first season at the Bulldogs.

"When I joined the Bulldogs I set myself a goal to play 12 games in first grade, then when I was picked for the first game of the year I looked beyond that and wanted to play well enough to be in every game," Goodwin said.

In another addition to the club's potent backline, Penrith 21-year-old winger Junior Tia Kilifi has signed a two-year contract.

Tia Kilifi made his NRL debut in round 17 this year and scored a 77th-minute match-winning try to help the Panthers prevail 38-34 over Parramatta at CUA Stadium.

The Dogs have also boosted their pack with the signing of 23-year-old St George Illawarra forward Micky Paea, also to a two-year deal.

"Mickey gives us a real point of difference, ticking a number of very important boxes which every club requires," coach Kevin Moore said.

"His early season form was rewarded with selection in the strong Dragons pack before he was hampered by injury, we look forward to Mickey bringing that impact and strong work ethic into our team as well."

Cronulla's former Australian Schoolboy Blake Green will also make the move to Belmore in 2010 and will add some depth in the Bulldogs' halves positions.

When in the hell are people going to get over the stupid "Bred not Bought" slogan that our OLD management came up with as a publicity stunt for a round 4 match over a year ago? Get over it. We all know the slogan was to draw crowds and make money and we did that with a 40k+ crowd and a sh*t load of merchandise sales.

When a team like Canterbury loses well over $2 million worth of talent over a couple of years (O'Meley, Asotasi, Mason, Money Bill, Sherwin, Hughes, Maitua, Tonga and so on) what do you expect the club to do? We had and still do have a lot of money to spend under the cap. I believe last year when we signed the likes of Hannant, Kimmorley and Ennis we had a ridiculous amount of salary cap space, something like $1.4 million to fill.

The club have now made some nice, smart and cheap signings in Tia Kilifi, Paea and Green.. All probably depth signings and for under 100k.

Very smart management by arguably the best in the game in Todd Greenberg. Well done Bulldogs in making the smart decisions to take the club further and stronger over the next 5 years. *claps*

Paea's Manager would have to be the world's biggest moron to let him sign anything like $100K.

You're kidding yourself if you think he's gone across for a pittance like $100K.

The irony has obviously not dawned on the Bulldogs fan with a Sydney 'Bulldogs' Roosters avatar when he claims that the decision to buy players from other clubs is indeed sound business and there is nothing wrong with it.

It's also rather fitting that 6 other people were thinking the same thing and posted sequentially...

Agreed. I am sad to see Paea go. He will be a monster of Mason proportions. hopefully, without the ego and disruptions to his career.

Point taken with the avatar. If you look at my join date, I joined ages ago. I have had that avatar since very early 2008 and got it from the DT. I'll have to change it won't I :D

And then you look at the Roosters, who under O'Sullivan have re-signed:

2009
Iosia Soliola (leaving)
Rohan Ahern (not sure, leaving I think)
Sonny Tuigamala (not sure, leaving I think)
Shane Shackleton (leaving)
Anthony Minichiello (supposed to re-sign for next year)

2010
Lopini Paea
Stanley Waqa

2011
Tom Symonds
Mitchell Aubusson
Shaun Kenny-Dowall
Frank-Paul Nuuausala

2012
Ben Jones
Jake Friend
Sam Perrett
Setaimata Sa
Anthony Cherrington

2013
Mitchell Pearce

That is 17 of this years top 25 who have made their first grade debuts for the Roosters and have never played for another club in first grade. So much for being a transit lounge, all these blokes are on relatively long deals too, apart from the leaving players.

Add to that, Martin Kennedy (played 2 FG games), Sandor Earl (played 3 FG games), and Mose Masoe are all contracted for the next season or two, and they are still playing NYC this year. Along with Ryan Williamson and the purchased Novocastrians Dane and Boyd Cordner.

The only 'transit' players remaining are Kouparitsas, Mason, Myles and Anasta, I believe. Koops won't last i reckon, Myles is viewed as a long-term prospect still, Mason and Anasta will have a major responsibility next season, and signings like Conn, Guerra, Takairangi, Waerea-Hargreaves are all potential signings rather than big-name purchases.
