Little gentlemanly restraint as Super League club makes grab for Finch

THE Melbourne Storm fire sale could soon be under way, with Brett Finch wanted immediately by an English Super League club. The Storm five-eighth, who was resigned to leaving the club even before their salary cap breach was exposed last month, will discuss the offer with his manager, Steve Gillis, in the next two days.
While other NRL clubs have maintained a respectable, non-predatory distance from Storm players as the implications of that club's penalties for its salary cap breaches continue to sink in, overseas counterparts have gone in for the kill.
Gillis would not say which Super League club had lodged the interest in Finch but did say it made it clear it wanted him straight away.
''I haven't had a chance to really discuss it with Brett,'' Gillis told the Herald. ''He's very conscious of the fact the Melbourne guys want to stick together so he's not in any rush to make any rash decisions. We'll just see what eventuates in the next few days.''
Any mid-season release would have to be approved by Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy and acting chief executive officer Frank Stanton.
But given the Storm are playing for no points, and were not in a position to keep Finch even before their penalty was handed out on April 22, there is unlikely to be much opposition by the club if he chose to leave.
Storm football manager Frank Ponissi said last night he had not heard of the Super League offer but could not imagine Melbourne standing in Finch's way if the 28-year-old thought he could further his career in England. ''This is news to us,'' Ponissi said. ''If we did get an approach we'd need to meet with the coach and the CEO and take it from there.
''Finchy is off-contract this year anyway and at the end of the day we spoke to him a long time ago and told him we weren't in a position to offer him anything for next year.
''He's been here just over 12 months but he's been phenomenal for the football club in that time. If we had room to keep him for the future we would have but it's not possible now - it wasn't even possible before the salary cap scandal.''
Forecast to be $1.3 million over the cap already next season the club will have to shed at least one, maybe two, of its star quartet of Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk, as well as others.
No cuts have yet been planned. Stanton and Ponissi are awaiting the conclusion of the NRL investigation into the cap breach and a forensic examination of the Storm's accounts by Deloitte, the accounting firm hired by club owner's News Ltd.

Damn... Finch at only 28 would have been good here for 3 years contract... Oh well not a big loss but we should get started on being predatoral as well!

Its clear Finch wasnt on the agenda, sadly enough we are resigning Dureau & Dodge.

We'll be linked to Finch and get no one, would love to know what the f**k goes on in the brains of the heads of our club.

Bag Finch all you like but the bloke owned our halves in the Storm game.

Currently he's better than Mullen, Rogers and Dureau combined.

Definately a sign of desperation on our behalf.

Because they are... marginally better than what we have doesn't mean we should be chasing them. All we are doing is replacing crap with more experienced crap. Finch may have owned our halves, but it helps when your in a team that is 1million over the cap. Average players looking good in great teams? We should have learnt that lesson already.

TBH, there is a person at the dragons we should be chasing for the halves.

Im thinking Beau Henry? But our inept club wont sign a single player... watch out for the re-signing of Dan Tolar and Cameron Ciraldo to 3 year deals

Frustrating (if true) that Super League clubs can have a go at poaching Storm players, but NRL clubs aren't allowed to just yet...

I think we dodged a bullet with both Finch and Perry, we're trying to rebuild long term and I don't see signing those guys as long term planning.
Everyone can see Beau Henry is a must, I don't care if we have to pay 200k for him, he'll be worth it. I don't buy this he needs a mentor either, realistically we can't fit Henry, Mullen and say Kimmorley in a team and I don't agree with letting him rot in NSW cup when Stone clearly has shown he doesn't care about the Centurions. What we need is Beau Henry, Trent Merrin, Jeff Lima, a good quality centre and a new coach and we'll be heading in the right direction. I also would only sign Simmo to a massively reduced deal. I love Simmo but he misses alot of football

I could see the big four going to superleague clubs TBH. They are all in melbourne for the fact they are paid well (and then some) and away from the sydney fishbowl. They have made four successive GFs and won two. They have also played origin (except Cronk) and for their country. None wants to play against each other at NRL level. They have nothing left to prove in this country. I think the ESL is a major threat to anyone in the NRL getting these marquees. Wigan are loaded so I would watch them closely.

we've been linked to Beau Henry in several articles... and i'd prefer him than anyone else on the market. Finch is an upgrade on what we already have, but he's not a halfback... he's an opportunist and clean-up artist at best.

Alls been quiet on the Henry front for awhile. Im starting to think that maybe signing him is a pipe dream also

Sad when you cant believe anything about your club until its all over the news.

When your club has potentially 1 million dollars to spend under the salary cap next year and signing a 20 yo kid who has never played NRL is a pipe dream it's just sad in general. Actually it would border on pathetic.

Not bothered really re: Finch

I would have been livid if we went after Perry. The bloke is not what we need at the club

haha its actually funny thinking how bad our administration is, like its actually unbelievably pathetic, im just starting to laugh at all the miss opportunities we have had to sign a couple of good players. They woulda still been better than re signing players we got.

we should be called the Newcastle Jesters. Keeps the whole medi-evil theme, just a more suitable mascot
