NRL A flood of derogatory emails labelling Brett Finch a traitor have raised fears that he may become a target for disgruntled Raiders fans at the club's next home game against Newcastle.
Finch announced on Tuesday he would quit the Raiders at the end of the season to join the Roosters on a three-year deal.
The young halfback has made it clear that his decision to leave was a difficult one and he has promised to give his all for the Canberra club for the rest of his contract.
That pledge apparently was not enough for some Raiders fans, who have bombarded coach Matt Elliott, the club and The Canberra Times with emails and letters slamming Finch for being disloyal and demanding that he be dropped.
Elliott is concerned that the matter may come to a head at the Raiders' next home game against Newcastle on July 14.
"I'm really disappointed about how some of our fans have interpreted the situation with Brett," Elliott said yesterday.
"I have received a heap of emails where Brett has been attacked for being disloyal.
"That is not the case at all. Brett does more work in the community with schools and junior rugby league than any other player at the club. He always puts in at training and he has always given his best for the Raiders."
Since storming on to the first-grade scene three seasons ago as an 18-year-old, Finch has been forced to endure a stormy relationship with the Raiders' faithful.
Many felt that Finch was given preferential treatment because his father Robert was the club's football manager.
When local junior Andrew McFadden quit the Raiders last season to link with Parramatta, many fans held a grudge against Finch.
The love-hate relationship hit a low point late last season when Finch was booed from the field after a 22-36 loss to the Northern Eagles at Canberra Stadium.
Finch had the chance to walk out on the Raiders there and then, but decided to take up a one-year option to stay. Article continues so check out link if you want to see the rest.
Furthermore, as I have said he was not booed from the ground, that is a popular misconception, only the selection of him as man of the match was booed.
I do agree with you and R69 that it was a good move for both parties.
