Should we go after Kimmorley?

I have always stated we are a quality halfback (Scott Prince) short of being a magnificent team.

Yay or Nay.

Bulldogs halfback Brett Kimmorley wants three more years

By Josh Massoud
January 14, 2010 Canterbury-Bankstown halfback and NRL ironman Brett Kimmorley has declared his willingness to defy retirement for another three seasons - when he'll be 36.
Describing last year's campaign as "easy", Kimmorley told The Daily Telegraph newspaper his body and mind were in the right shape to continue beyond his 16th season in the top grade.

"At the moment I feel good, I feel like I can keep going," Kimmorley, 33, said.

"Last year was easy. The success we had on the field and the way the club looked after everyone, made it a very enjoyable season.

"I also enjoyed the fact I knew my role, so I felt pretty fresh all year.

"At the moment I'm thinking that if I'm still this happy and excited then I'd love to play on."

Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg and coach Kevin Moore opened discussions about Kimmorley's future with an in-depth meeting with their halfback last month. And the incumbent NSW No. 7 said it was already understood that he won't move to a rival club should a contract extension not be forthcoming.

"If I'm not playing at the Bulldogs, I won't be playing at all," Kimmorley said.

"I'm looking forward to having just as good a year in 2010.

"Hopefully after the next 12 months I'm just as passionate that I'll be able to play football for another one, two or three years.

"I've talked to some players who've recently retired, my family and my manager.

"If I can stay at this level, then I'd be putting my hand up to go around again.

"One of the other main things I wanted to also make clear (to the Bulldogs) is that I'd like to stay involved beyond football. I want to become a coach in some capacity."

The Bulldogs have already responded to Kimmorley's post-football wish, and plan to help him complete his NRL Coaching Certificate II. In the meantime, the veteran has taken an even bigger role in mentoring the club's young halves. He works closely with Toyota Cup playmaker Rhys Jack and also supports the club's bid to sign Daniel Mortimer, who the Bulldogs view as a suitable successor to Kimmorley's No. 7 jersey.

"If we got Daniel, it would be a terrific long-term signing for the club," Kimmorley said.

"I know he's never played at the Bulldogs, but it would mean something for the family name to return.

"It would be wonderful if we could get him on board and I know Kevvy and Todd see him as a long-term No. 7."

This week's return to training has been Kimmorley's first opportunity to practise ballwork since he had surgery on his groin after last September's heart-breaking preliminary final loss to Parramatta.

We don't need the one Trick Pony , Noddy will have played one sesaon two many in 2010. Last year the Dogs were the suprise packet , not this season , they will be targeted from round 1 , Long term Moltzen Marshall has a nice ring to it !

Personally I think he'd go all-right here. He clearly has the best kicking game in the competition. That's all we need from a halfback. Benji and Robbie can do all the organising and play making, leaving Kimmorley free to just kick.

There were rumours earlier in 2009 that Thurston's contract ends at the end of this season and he is keen to return to the bulldogs. If we signed Noddy, I reckon we'd get 3 very good seasons from him, if his role was to just kick. He's also a slightly better goalkicker than Benji.

His defence style is a bit of a worry, but one thing is for certain, he's not afraid to have a crack at tackling and thats a good thing.

My only concern is his asking price. If he were asking for 180k-220k then I'd go after him, but I dare say he'll be chasing something around 400k.

I don't think we need Noddy. I am confident Moltzen and Marshall will go well in the halves and Taumata is a good backup halfback/five eighth if one of them get injured. We also have young Lui but he isn't quite ready yet untill he improves his defence.

Kimmorley's kicking game is ten times better than all those guys combined at their best.

It turns players around giving our defence even more time to get to the other end of the field, leaving the opposition to start their attack from deep within their own half.

That on itself is the one thing we have missed majorly since 2006 and has more than likely contributed to many of our losses.

Besides, having an experienced older head in the halves wouldn't be at all a bad thing. As I said before, he wouldn't have to worry about organising or creating plays, he'll just be there for his kicking, and to take some pressure off benji and robbie if required.

I personally think he'd be very well suited to our style of play.

He won't be going to you guys. He's got 1 year left on his contract with the option for 2011 there too!
Kevin Moore has made his feelings known that this will be kimmorleys last year at the dogs.

Dogs are working on a plan to get Thurston. Thurston is working on a plan to go there and to get sh*tloads of cash at the same time.

Whats the bet Andrew Ryan retires as well as Luke Patten before the seasons end.

Plenty of coin made available there for JT.

We have the two best live wires in the NRL. Whether or not that equals a successful halves combo is a different story. At least Taumata has something of a kick on him.

If I were the Dogs, I'd be letting Kimmorley play until he didn't want to anymore, ala Preston Campbell and the Titans.

He'd be wasted at the Tigers. We've already shown that we're not interested in dominant halfbacks, after the way Matty Head was treated.

He has, but as has happened many times before at Belmore, what the coach says and what the coach does can be 2 completely different things at times. If Brett has another excellent year in 2010, Kevin may well want to keep him on.

For reasons which I cannot disclose on this forum publicly (but more than happy to in PM), Jonathon Thurston will not be coming back to the Bulldogs side ever again. One thing I can say though is that the Bulldogs Club is over paying overs for players after the Mason/Maitua/SBW fiascoes.

Ryan Perhaps. Patten will be 30 at seasons end, might still have some years left in him.
