Brett Morris calls on fans to respect Soward

RUGBY LEAGUE

Dragons international Brett Morris has urged the team's fans to show 2010 premiership teammate Jamie Soward respect when he returns to WIN Stadium with Penrith on Sunday.

Jamie Soward

In Tuesday's Illawarra Mercury, Soward said he expected a hostile reception from the Red V fans, after his time at the club came to a sour end mid-season last year, when he fell out with former coach Steve Price and was dropped to the Illawarra Cutters.
A missed penalty goal that would have sent the Dragons' round 12 match with the Bulldogs into golden point extra time proved his last act for the club, before a stint in the English Super League and his highly successful switch to the foot of the mountains this year.
Soward faced off against his former teammates this year in the Panthers' 18-14 victory over his old club in round 14, but Sunday's match will be the first time he has returned to the venue he called home during his seven-year stint with the Dragons.
Soward said on Monday he expects to be "bagged" by the crowd when he runs out in Panthers garb but Morris hopes that's not the case.
"The Dragons fans really took a liking to Sowie when he was here. I think the Dragons fans really respect him as a player and it's probably one of the worst things you can do to a player like that - boo him as he runs out.
"Sowie's a bloke who wears his heart on his sleeve so he's obviously going to be pretty pumped up for this game.
Morris said a pumped-up Soward was just one of the Dragons' concerns as they take on a Panthers side fresh off a 22-16 win over the Bulldogs last week.
The Dragons need to win four of their last five games to make the finals and will be looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time under Paul McGregor.
"They're coming off a good win against the Doggies and they're a quality side," Morris said.
"They're a very young side but they're playing with a lot of confidence and we've got to take that into account.
McGregor named an unchanged line-up on Tuesday with Bronson Harrison and Dan Hunt added to the 17 that played against the Roosters on Saturday.

Unfortunately, after his last few interviews where he has aired some dirty
laundry, he will get a few boos and stuff. But it was his choice and he has to be prepared to cop it. He was great for us, but has shown his sour side more than once and could of just let it go. Now he can get stuffed!

Dear Jamie
Our fondness for you hasn’t Soward.
We won’t boo you
We may cheer every time you miss a goal or throw an intercept pass but that’s just feeling the love.

Oh and Brett has been really nice to you in the paper today He’s even been calling his brother’s team “The Doggies” so throw a few passes his way. He’s gone all super-hero. I think it’s the combination of saving NSW with a broken shoulder and wearing the Iron Man pyjamas last week. He’ll get over it but my need to be bitten by a mongrel dog or Cronulla player.

Please remember to congratulate all the Dragons players after the game.

It might help if he was down on form but he he is high on confidence and I suspect any heat in the game abd he'll go up a gear.

There was a bit of this garbage at the Riff in the earlier game. A couple of young blokes with several expensive beers onboard were giving it to him, and giving it to our cheerleaders as well. I had to intervene. If our girls are ugly, what then did that make them? It was all good natured. Sowie landed two kicks from right in front of us and wasn't at all put off.

I don't think any Saints fan will boo Soward. Then again, I didn't think any Saints fan would buy an ironman costume. I'm out of touch

We know what Sowie can do against his former teams eg us v Rorters.

Yeah there will be boos no doubt, cant blame the fans for that so hopefully(for penrith) he can use it for motivation or whatever. Being down on troops we need the great man to fire ;-).

The bloke got boo'd, cat called and called coward by Saints fans when he played for us. You can be guaranteed there will be those who will give it to him this time around. Some just can't help themselves. You only have to peruse these forums for a short time to see some of the disgraceful stuff that gets posted about current players in the Red V to see the mentality that exists at times. Fffs I was at a game in the 70's where a so called 'fan' was giving it to Changa deluxe, and the man was an immortal of the game.

I won't boo him, but I do hope his headgear slips down over his eyes at some point in the game causing him to make a vital error that gifts us victory. I'd cheer that.

Tallis is the only player who deserved to get booed after his dog act by sitting out the year.
The Man (Mundine) made a mistake and knew straight away he wanted back at the Dragons so he is forgiven.
I don't have a beef with Soward, just want him to get on with his career and not put our club down because he's pissed off with us.

I never understand this 'I hope nobody boo's him' things fans say about their ex-players.

I love Soward, he's up there with my all-time favourite Saints. But anyone who plays against is an enemy. And quite frankly, deserve to die.

GKD is right, they deserve to die. And I predict that they will, some day. You just wait and see if I'm wrong.
