Brett Stewart and Manly - Reality Check

This love-in over Brett Stewart's return yesterday is sickening. Fact is - until he's cleared, he's up for rape.

Rugby league is sending out a clear message - it doesn't matter what disgusting acts or crimes you commit, Number 1 priority is winning a football game - society's normal rules don't apply to rugby league players.

Let's note the game's recent reputational highlights:
  • Poster boy for the game up for rape;
  • International player belts a sponsor after making crude comments to his daughter;
  • First grader caught for high level drink driving;
  • Former topline player banned from his own hometown;
  • Greatest player in the game a drug addict.
Don't forget the player collapsing dead drunk in the street, bullets fired at players, sex in hotel toilets etc etc.

You can't take the NRL seriously because their interest is taking money out of the game for News Limited - not what's in the best interests of the game. In fact, incidents like these are great fodder for very ordinary "journalists" and News Limited sell more papers.

Manly have always been regarded as putting their club well ahead of the game itself. If Manly had any self-respect, they would keep Stewart out of the team and let the court case take its course. By playing him, they are further hurting the reputation of a code which is fast becoming a laughing stock.

It's time Manly had respect for the game instead of pure self-interest.

Why didn't you make this post about Warriors or Titans when Laffranchi and Crockett were waiting for their court dates?

Shut the f**k Up Ronny. Stale old merkin.

Actually, the fact is he is currently innocent of any crime, and is only guilty of making a fool of himself drunkenly in public, for which he has served his punishment. Until he is found guilty he is innocent of sexual assualt, not rape. It was never rape.

There's a certain principle that lies at the very core of Western law Ronnie.

Innocent until proven guilty.

I dislike Manly as much as anybody, but your hardon for anything to do with them deeply concerns me.

The only facts that are correct about all this is that North went broke and they won't be back. They had their window, they blew it and this bloke loses credibility with every bitter Manly attack. He should find a new NRL team or alternatively, if he doesn't like League culture go join the hoopla circuit that travels from school fete to school fete.

What did we expect tbh?

The reality check is that Brett Stewart bagged three pies, Manly are still premiers (40-0 btw) and Ronnie still needs to be taken back to his cell.

While I have very few problems of him playing for Manly, I do feel a bit uneasy about him being hailed as Manly's great saviour. Yes, he had a good game, but lets not forget the seriousness of the charges he has against him.

yep from the replies no one seems to give a crap that the guy who the NRL has backed to be the face is up for sexual assault. what does the league say if he is found guilty, who will look like teh merkin then. The NRL should have stepped him out of the game until he was in fact proven innocent
