Brett Stewart may go to court to have ban overturned

It's a business expense to pay for defending a sexual assault charge? My issue is really about that than the submissions to overturn the ban.

So all business expenses are now under the cap? Their business expenses are probably well over 10 Million like every other club.

Sorry I was confusing the issue.

With what others were saying, Geoff Bellew and Brett Stewart are acting independently of Manly on this issue, therefore, Brett Stewart should be paying for this, and it shouldn't have anything to do with Manly. But we don't actually know if Manly is paying Bellew for this service.

No we don't, but in the early days of this it was reported Manly had appointed Bellew which has me wondering...hope shoey is keeping a close eye on it.

Clutching at straws I think. This expense, if Manly were to pay it, is the same as if they had any other legal expense pertaining to the running of the club. None of that is under the cap as it would be impossible to enforce.

Good, 4 weeks for being pissed at a club function is a complete joke. Hopefully his ban can be overturned.

In Canberra for all-day meetings with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and senior Federal parliamentarians, Gallop said:

WTF

He's trying to get some money off the federal gvnmt.

Brett Stewart clearly has too much time on his hands these days... should be focussing on his "other" court case.

I know it is debatable but thats my view. He was on official work duty where he got smashed and got into this situation. If somone is injured going to and from work they are covered by workers compensation, the employer would need to cover the assocaiated costs. Very grey area but if it was any other club I would take the same view. If we was out on the piss on a saturday with mates not at an official function my view would be different.

yeah but he went to another pub after the function, therefore from then on it isn't going home from work anymore, it's on his own time, if i went to work, went out on the piss friday night and got into an accident at 4am i would not be getting workers comp!

I can't help but think that Stewart and his lawyers would be fighting this ruling if they didn't think he was going to be vindicated by the outcome of his court case. I can't imagine them doing this if they were concerned about that.

Obviously I could be wrong, but I hope not.

Really if they win, it sets the game back so much it's not funny. It says that Rugby League players can do whatever they like and the rest of us can get stuffed.

So much for paying the game back for the lifestyle they now get to enjoy.

I would have thought the opposite tbh. The problem for Gallop is that 4 weeks for being pissed is way over the top, which is probably why Gallop is showing his consistency in hammering Seymour for doing bugger all.

If they win, I think it can only hurt themselves, especially if found guilty of of the sexual assault charges. If the court case finds overwhelmingly in Stewarts favour then they may be vindicated in trying to overturn the ban. Gallop has done all he legally can to prevent him from playing, and I think the public understands that. If he gets the ban overthrown, it won't be through lack of trying by the NRL.

But what about the media. It has never been kind to the NRL, and I can't see how they won' take it out of context, and unfortunately most of the public opinion is shaped by the media.

Manly should have a word to Stewart about what he is doing (although I am 100% sure they pushed him down this path), and stop it. He is a grown man and should understand that he is being punished for something he admits to not even remembering being involved in.
