We knew it was coming, I just hope it doesn't see a lack of commitment from Smithy in 2006..

i think this is a good move. it gets the story over and done with before the season gets under way and there will not be the speculation in the media over whether BS will be the coach in '07. it also allows Parramatta to actively seek a new coach and have him in place early so he can be involved in planning and decision making re players for 07.

the only question is where oh where will BS go. maybe the club is keen for a clean break away from BS. i am sure several clubs would benefit from him.

or maybe he would hang around as an advisor, especially if we get a junior coach in like JT

what a f**king lame pile of sh*t to say....the guy has put more sweat and tears into the club than anyone in the last decade and has stuck through all the bad times trying to make something of the eels .... so don't go suggesting that will change because of your own personal dislike of the man

As mentioned previously don't be surprised if it isn't JT.......

I doubt Brian will be held on in an advisory role either - that in part is a big shame.

if there's a lack of committment next season from Smithy it would be because of other reasons rather than the fact that it's his last season as head coach at the club.

Again, that's all I'm saying.

Seriously, why announce this when the bloke has a year to go? He's going to be a dead duck coach for the year. Methinks either:

1. He'll be forced to step down as his position has become untenable; or
2. It could be yet another season of underachievement for the Eels thanks to some strange decisions from the front office.

Very strange.

You have a new club joining the competition in 2007 and a number of good youngsters of contract at the end of 2006. Get a new coach in early and let him talk with the players he wants before the June 30 deadline rather than wait until the season has ended and the young players have all gone. Smithy is the ultimate professional and would take this in his stride. He pretty much knew this would be the last roll of the dice for him. This saves a lot of f**king around behind the scenes and speculation which causes more problems - something Manly have witnessed recently.

Not really surprising at all but is it a full release or just from the position of head coach, will he still be staying on as a coaching co-ordinator similar to Phil Gould at the Roosters when Stuart first came into the top grade?

thats what i am thinking hurri, and jt will be handed the reins

From what I have heard he won't be offered a co-ordinator role like Gus and it appears JT may not be the first choice...
