Exactly how long is Smith signed up to us for? I swear I just heard Kimmorley on NRL Tactics say that he's signed up for another 3 years, but I thought he only signed a one year extension back in February?

He's been extended till 2010, and then there is the option to further extend the contract for another year based on a top 4 finish from memory.

I actually thought he was extended through to the end of 2012...maybe that is with options though...

How long do people think he should be extended for? I'd like him to stay til the end of 2011 then move on, any longer then 5-6 years at a club and coach's start turning into bad milk.

I thought he had a 1 year extension, and if he got the team into the top four this season he would get a further 2 years extension!

Im sure he was given a one year extension this year. Which will take him to 2010 then if we make the Top 4 this year he will get a extra year which will then take him to 2011. Then i think he should move on if we have a better option for coach. Because im sure they hired him to re-build the club and he is already halfway there now. I like him but not sure if he can take us that next step

Meanwhile, the Newcastle Knights yesterday confirmed a deal had been struck for coach Brian Smith to remain at the club until the end of next season - and possibly longer. The deal, which has yet to be finalised, includes performance triggers, which result in Smith's tenure being extended beyond 2010.

The exact nature of the triggers have not been disclosed but it is understood that a top-four berth this season would guarantee Smith a further extension.

Maybe the trigger was if we had 8 wins before the our first BYE he'd get a 2 year extension :sarcasm:

So what would you offer him if he manages to break his premiership duck?

At Manly they kept talking about KPIs with Des Hasler. I think Brian Smith's KPI is make the Top 4.

Smith needs to be given a chance to build the team and then work with it. He's still building - he deserves 2010 and 2011 at a minimum. I have the feeling he's building something special and needs some time and patience (rather than the earlier snide comments by those who only seem to remember the last few games...).
