Brisbane Bombers Bid

No matter what you do it's inevitable that one club is going to be bigger than the other, even if it's only marginally so, but hypothetically where do you think the Jets are now if instead of being the New York Jets they are the e.g. the Hell's Kitchen Jets or even just the Manhattan Jets?

The answer is that they probably aren't anywhere near where they are now because most people from in New York that aren't from Hell's Kitchen or Manhattan aren't going to be interested in following a club from Hell's Kitchen or Manhattan, especially when the New York Giants exist, and that is one of the main issues that any new Brisbane team is going to face so long as the Brisbane Broncos exist.

Actually now that I think about it I'd totally follow the Hell's Kitchen Devils/Demons just because it's such a cool brand (might have copyright trouble with Marvel though), but that is an exception to the rule lol.
Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham etc. boast support a lot bigger than area name represents.

No one is Brisbane is going to support Redcliffe or Ipswich if they are in the NRL unless they come from those areas. I've never liked the Dolphins and geographically Redcliffe is a pain in the butt to get to for most of Brisbane. Most league fans in Brisbane support a Q Cup team. I cant see a Wynnum or Souths Logan fan supporting Redcliffe in the NRL.

The bid that makes most sense to me is Brothers because they dont have to appeal only to Brisbane people. Most areas have a Brothers team. Ipswich, Toowoomba, Mackay, Townsville, all throughout regional Qld and NSW. You'd find a Brothers NRL team would automatically have the largest membership if reciprocal membership became a thing.

Play 8 games at Suncorp and then another 4 in regional areas that has a Brothers team. Hell, you dont even have to have Brisbane in the teams bame.

Brothers planned to increase the number of games outside of Brisbane over time, and were strongly suggesting that eventually they'd play the majority of their games outside of Brisbane. They also wouldn't rule out playing games outside of Queensland, in fact they named Darwin, Wagga, Penrith, and IIRC North Sydney in their bid material as markets that they would target.

Apart from the fact that I find it extremely unlikely that all the members of their disparate clubs will drop their current allegiances to follow the Brothers NRL club in significant numbers, I don't really have a problem with the Brothers bid in theory (in fact I find the concept very interesting), but it isn't, and never was, a 'Brisbane bid', and as such it should be treated as something entirely separate from the goings-on in Brisbane. In other words, with or without a Brothers NRL team you'd still need another Brisbane team.

Besides all that, it's not clear if the bid is hibernating or if it's dead, as their website and all their social media died quite a while ago and, as far as I know, nobody has heard a peep out of them in a long time either.

Brothers would be an even more divisive brand than Dolphins or Jets. I grew up in a town with a Brothers club and you either played for Brothers or you hated Brothers.

South Queensland "whatevers"
Sorted
Its better to call it in broader terms than lock it into a specific area
Brisbane works, coz its the whole city
Gold coast ditto, North Qld is northern half of qld, all simple
But call redcliffe, or ipswich etc gonna be problems
Crushers worked, until superleague, and news ltd made it not work
Just start again. Maybe go with Demons
SOUTH Queensland Demons
Red/ Purple/ Gold

Time to reboot the Logan City Scorpions then I guess?

I’m sure that many years ago I read somewhere that Logan City was in somewhat serious conversations with the NSWRL about entering - obviously all fell over with the 1995 teams, and then Logan folded into Souths in 2001/2..

Geographical based teams are the way to go - big populations out there to target. Bombers will fail like Crushers.

Brisbane is capital of rugby league throughout world. Ipswich Jets & Redcliffe would sell out stadiums every week should NRL choose to go down that route. Both would add TV ratings in Brisbane. Can't see any team establishing a following without focusing on a particular geographical area - no examples of this exist. Both north & south Brisbane are large enough to sustain teams.

is it? 30k crowd avg in city of 2.3 million Isnt very impressive. Heck St. Helens get 12k in a town of 100k!

Article in the Courier Mail says the Bombers have approached Craig Bellamy to be their coaching director for 2023. The article is really nothing but a bit of publicity for the Bombers. Bellamy doesn't even endorse the Bombers and only states that he supports a second team in Brisbane. But he doesn't state which bid that he supports.

I remember the Redcliffe Dolphins took a swipe at other bids for publicising every exchange with an NRL official to get a bit of publicity in the hopes of boasting their bid. I see no difference with this article approaching Bellamy on a position that doesn't even exist yet and then it gets into the media. I remember years ago the Bombers trumping that they wanted Mal Meninga as their coach as well

I am hoping that once Cam Smith retires Bellamy retires.
The NRL should employ Bellamy in the role Head of Debellamy. That’s the branch of the NRL in charge of DeBellamising the game. Bellamy should be in charge of it.
Unravelling the influence Bellamy has had on the game.

Wow. Do the Bombers now have the upper-hand? According to Peter Badel they do. Apparently they have the ear of the new ARL Commission Peter V’landys.

"To understand the looming migraine around NRL expansion, and where to precisely place Brisbane’s second team to challenge the Broncos, consider the strategic thinking of the code’s recent decision-makers.

Former NRL CEO David Gallop was keen to expand to Brisbane’s western belt at Ipswich, the home of Broncos legends Allan Langer and Kevin Walters.

Former ARL Commission chairman Peter Beattie had his eyes on Redcliffe, the peninsula powerhouse that represents Brisbane’s version of Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Now, Beattie’s successor, new chair Peter V’landys, is reportedly impressed with the bid by the Brisbane Bombers, who have held regular clandestine meetings with Storm super coach Craig Bellamy.

Privately, Gallop detested the Bombers name. In a sport that thrives on gladiatorial combat, he argued it was too aggressive. Work that one out. We can only presume Gallop would have preferred a new Brisbane team to be called the Flamingoes, Fairies or Powderpuffs.

Regardless of the nickname, the key for the ARLC and NRL boss Todd Greenberg is to nail the geographic birthplace of the NRL’s 17th team _ or risk decades of disaster.

The potential pitfall facing the code is the very posse of heavy-hitters who will decide on likely expansion into Queensland for 2023 have very little understanding of ... the Queensland market itself.

The NRL is largely a Sydney-centric beast. Ten of the 16 clubs, more than 60 per cent of the NRL competition, are based in NSW.
Many of the code’s narratives are shaped around what suits the Sydney clubs. For too long, the ARLC and NRL bosses have fretted over the financial demands of impoverished Sydney clubs, all the while missing the goldmine that exists in the Brisbane metropolitan market.

Brisbane’s Gross Regional Product, the measure of goods and services sold in a specific region, is an estimated $171 billion.

That is a staggering figure that paints the Brisbane metro market as a financial juggernaut.

Factor in 2.4 million residents in the Brisbane region - as opposed to 210,000 in Ipswich and 459,585 in Redcliffe’s wider Moreton Bay catchment - and the expansion argument for V’landys and Greenberg should be a no-contest.

“The NRL and the broadcasters need a Brisbane city team, not regional outposts,” Bombers shareholder Craig Davison said.

“No disrespect to Redcliffe and Ipswich, but they are regional areas. That’s the reality when you look at population numbers and corporate strength.

“World sport shows the power of the duopoly effect of two teams in one city.

“The English Premier League has Manchester United and Manchester City. The AFL has two teams in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney.

“Imagine an intercity rivalry in Brisbane with the Broncos. It would be a money-spinner for all concerned in the game.”

Ipswich chief Steve Johnson argues the western-corridor region will better service the NRL’s grassroots.

“The fact is our region has more registered players than Brisbane and we have nearly 30 per cent of all Queensland players,” Johnson said.

“We will grow crowd numbers, add TV viewers and bring new sponsors to the game, all while being a valuable contributing member of the community.

“We are the unique bid that will make the NRL stronger in every area.”

Bombers director Nick Livermore scoffed at calls for a second Brisbane team in Redcliffe.

“The Brisbane metro market is the largest commercial hub between Sydney and Singapore. That’s a reality,” Livermore said.

“To suggest the Broncos have even saturated the greater Brisbane region is a complete fallacy.

“Redcliffe are an incredibly strong brand in the Intrust Super Cup, but an NRL Dolphins team will alienate most of Brisbane. Will Easts Tigers, Wynnum Manly and Norths Devils fans back them? I doubt it.

“If Redcliffe play the Wests Tigers on a wet Suncorp Stadium on a Thursday night, how many fans are the Dolphins going to get?

“This is the most confident I have been of the NRL expanding by 2023. Peter V’landys is by far the most capable chair that has come onto the ARL Commission and when Peter has a vision for something, based on his track record, he achieves his goals.

“If he wants another team in Brisbane, I would back Peter in to succeed.”

Let’s just hope PVL doesn’t need a Refidex to get his bearings on Brisbane.:

that’s on V’Landys if they’re pursuing Thursday nights after 2022.
