Canadian Steve:
I'm from Sydney but live in Queensland. I'd be silly for me to say I don't like Qld. For a dozen reasons, I actually really like it here... almost as much as New South Wales
. I'm sure your mate is good to talk sports with and I can confirm that the rivlary between Qld and NSW is the main reason for the success of the the SOO.
But I can't work how any Brisbane supporter can ever say that they started Super League because they were 'shafted.'
On the contrary, Sydney sacrificed it's own competition so other teams could develop.
In 1908, it was known as the 'Sydney Premiership Competition' or simply, the 'Sydney Comp.'
Teams came and went but they were always from the Sydney Metropolitian area (with the exception of Newcastle which briefly fielded a team in 1908-9). This remained the case until the 1980s when the Sydney comp gave way to teams like Canberra, Illawarra, Newcastle and Brisbane, a hybrid team made up out the struggling Brisbane comp.
From almost the outset the Queensland Rugby League and Brisbane demanded more say in the New South Wales Rugby League which along with the Australian Rugby League controlled the new expanded premiership. Although the Sydney Comp was gone, the new comp still had many Sydney teams in it.
The NSWRL agreed with Brisbane and gave them equal say on the board. John Ribot was one of these board members.
Not satisfied with this, the Brisbane connection wanted more and eventually became the catalyst behind the soul destroying Super League war... which BTW started because of greed.
Naturally, there's always two sides to every story but I think it's fair to say that the Brisbane rugby league team owes it's existence to Sydney.
