Afl types believe they are taking over based on bs Auskick numbers

With the population growth up there over the next 20 years Brisbane 3 will be a slam dunk

Ikin is smart unfortunately… Ive seen two articles now in a week from him about Ipswich Team 20 …might be the start of a campaign..NZ2 is in trouble… no credible bid

If Pvl picks them over nz2 then so be it

But Christchurch bears were plan b if Perth bears fell over

And if tv companies in nz really want another team and pay for it it will happen

“If Super League taught us anything it is that history counts," Ikin added

"It can't be manufactured. The Bears survived for a long time at the top end of the game and continued to exist while not being afforded the opportunity.”

He’s a good lad

Always like him after they won origin in 1995

It's not about "earning" spots.

It's about growing the games supporter and playing base.
Which Ipswich will do. Look at the Dolphins, there are an extra 25k average tickets being sold in Brisbane than before their arrival, an extra 30k memberships being sold and participation in SEQ is up. Broncos average is also up.

Is this all because of the Phins? No, but RL is booming here and part of the reason is because of the growth of adding the Dolphins to the NRL.

The other case for Ipswich is, for every Adelaide and Perth you add to the league, you need a Dolphins and Ipswich, a RL nursery that will produce players.

With Queensland RL of course there is also a case of us having earnt it. We are a major piece of the backbone of the game. Our local league was destroyed by the NSWRL admitting the Broncos and bringing back two traditional brands in strategically intelligent areas is doing as much for the game to heal here as it is is Sydney to honour their history and bring back Souths, Manly and the Bears.

You have to ask yourself if they generate any new fans though, I would argue that Ipswich is Broncos territory right now.

I also think that your emotive discussion around "healing" means nothing in 2025, and only Boomers were around in 88.

Regardless It's not realistic to think the BRL would have survived against the cashed up Sydney teams with or without the Broncos.

Clearly the 2 Brisbane sides are thriving, let's leave them be for at least a decade.

So if team 20 enters in 2033, it would equate to four new teams coming in over a decade. Dolphins 2023, Perth Bears 2027, PNG 2028, Team 20 2033. Which is better than introducing four new teams at the same time like it was back in 1995.

Just get the feeling that the NRL might be reactive with Team 20. Brisbane will have the Olympics in 2032. A new 60,000 seat oval stadium will open. Post Olympics, cricket and fumbles will benefit.

Their existing tv deal ends in 2031. So a new tv rights cycle for the AFL will begin in 2032, the same year as the Brisbane Olympics. It kinda makes sense for them to introduce a second team in 2032. Even though the second team may struggle for a point of difference from the Lions. As Ben Ikin says, "history counts".

And the NRL could be reactive by introducing Ipswich/ Brisbane 3 in 2033 to combat the increased AFL content in Brisbane.

Might be the best reactive move the NRL has ever made. But the code needs to expand in NZ. Give the Warriors a derby game. If Brisbane 3 is Team 20, than Christchurch could be Team 21, just a few years later, like 2037 or 2038.

Yeh agreed

Also can’t see why Ipswich don’t try playing home games at the new Brisbane stadium as a point of difference

This place is schizophrenic.

"Oval stadiums are shit"

Then suddenly the Storm and Bri3 should play games on them regularly.

I’ve never really subscribed to this argument. Kids in Ipswich have pathways to the NRL and will be found if they’re good enough, adding an Ipswich team just means they might go through a different system.

In saying that Ipswich, Toowoomba, Tigers etc all already run junior teams in the QLD Comps. Those will probably be improved with some investment with an NRL team at the top but it doesn’t bring many if any new players.

PNG, Christchurch and yes even Perth bring new players in to elitepathways, players that otherwise look elsewhere (Union) or don’t have great access to pathways like PNG historically.

Plenty going for Ipswich to be team 20-21, a near certainty I’d imagine for one of those spots, I just think there are bigger strengths to be selling for their entry.

Melbourne (and Perth) as a one off each year to try and get a far bigger crowd and some media attention, I say yes.

Ipswich playing at a 62k Oval when there is a 52k Suncorp just down the road, I say hard no. Keep pushing for Suncorp upgrades by regularly selling it out while the Oval rarely gets close to be being full post-Olympics.

I'd go so far as to say it's probably the stupidest post we've seen this year.

Nah meant the oval

Three teams at Suncorp could be overkill

Plus it might help them get fans

I suspect ipsiwch will get their ground up to 20k or so and use it for smaller games

If Ipswich is 25k to 30k, then they should play majority of their home games at the ground, except for Broncos and Dolphins. Ipswich could transfer those two home games to Suncorp.

Not a fan of rectangular sports played on oval grounds. It's up to the oval sports to fill it up with content.
