Broncos have unfair advantage

I have come to the conclusion that the Brisbane Broncos have an unfair advantage over the other teams in the competition.
Why?
Friday night football.
Looking over the early season draw for 2009 and it looks like channel 9 and the NRL are obsessed with the Broncos playing on Friday nights.
The NRL have released the dates of matches up until round 7 so far and the Broncos play on Friday night in rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 !
That means that round 3 is the only match not played on a Friday night for the Broncos, and that’s because its over in New Zealand.

In my opinion this is completely unfair.
My reasons are:
* Crowds - Friday nights are usually great for crowds, especially compared to Saturday nights and Monday nights, so the Broncos are always getting the optimum crowd figures. People are also more likely to have a good drink on Friday nights because it’s a typically celebratory day in Australia and most don’t have to go to work the next day when compared to Monday night football where people can’t drink at the footy etc, so they have boosted sales.
* Sponsorships – The Broncos’ sponsors are getting an unfair amount of exposure on free to air television when compared to every other teams sponsors, therefore sponsors would be more likely to sign with Brisbane in the future.

But the main reason for me is:
* Team cohesion – The Broncos squad is playing on Friday night every week (except one), so their players can be much better set in their training and preparation for matches compared to other sides which are playing on Sunday then the next Friday then back to Monday then backing up on the Saturday etc etc.

I know that the television networks get to pick the matches they wish to show but surely the NRL has to step in when its becoming a clear advantage to one side like this is, its ridiculous and just annoying, who wants to watch Brisbane EVERY damn Friday night anyway? Give someone else a run!

getting the max turn around every week to recover and prepare for a match is a huge advantage, to get 6 of the 1st 7 rounds with the full weeks prep cant be understimated,.

The Broncos have an unfair advantage in that they're a one city side and thus have a larger pool of talent to pick from than other clubs. They also have an unfair advantage in that it's easiier to retain their playing roster as a lot of players don't want to leave Brisbane and there is a lot more individual sponsorship chances in a club city.

Really you are an idiot, who really cares? If the Broncos rate on a friday night, then let's keep playing them on a friday night.

I'm sure the reason they do it is to offset the 40 point flogging they are going to receive at the hands of the mighty Red V in Round 4.

its about Ch9 .. they prefer a game with Qld team(s) to be shown live into QLD and a NSW game shown live into NSW on FNF.

So its basically a choice of Broncos/Cowboys/Titans for one of the Friday night games ...

Cowboys featured in the first one and drew Tigers for the 2nd one (hardly a top rating promise)

Brisbane on the other hand have drawn Cowboys and then last years Grand Finalists.

Titans have drawn knights and then Dragons .. If we had a situation where Broncos were playing Raiders, Cowboys Tigers and GoldCoast Dragons then it would be a reasonable bet to assume the Titans would have been on FNF.

Lets look at the next 4 weeks ...

Rd 3 ... Titans get a FNF game
Rd 4 ... Broncos get a FNF game
Rd 5 ... Broncos again (surprised its not the Titans vs Cowboys though)
Rd 6 ... Broncos and Titans get a FNF game
Rd 7 ... Broncos again

Broncos are the highest rating team and therefore get a majority of Friday night games. Until your team rates higher that will be the case. Is it unfair? Probably. Better for crowds however? No. You will find that Sunday is a better day in Brisbane for crowds. It may seem that way after the first 2 rounds as they were bumper games and would draw a high crowd any day of the week.

Yup, thats expansion for ya!

Its not a case of begrudging Brisbane being in the competition, its a case of one team having perfect preperation each week and free to air exposure and every other team not getting the same.

Having a set day to play which is the same each and every week is a huge advantage for the players getting themselves ready.

While I'm here....as a Broncos supporter I would love to see us play more saturday night games and sunday games. Saturday night games seem non existent for us!

channel 9 might listen to you, but then i highly doubt it. Everyone talks about how the broncos keep all these players...well over the past 2 yrs take a look @ all the players they have lost!

People generally get sick of watching Brisbane play anyway, fortunately for me I have foxtel but for people who don't it gets frustrating seeing one team 6 times in 7 weeks and some teams not at all...

And as for ratings in QLD, pffft, every person I know from Brisbane hates the Broncos more than anyone else!

Yeah I was under the impression that the Broncos are always pushing for Sunday arvo games at home... not the Friday night like we always seem to get.

So you know 4 people in Brisbane, well done.

I can assure you there are literally hundreds of thousands of Bronco fans in Brisbane.

Yeah maybe it is unfair. It just so happens that when the NSWRL expanded they expanded into an area that already was obsessed with RL. Unlike when the AFL expanded into NSW and QLD.

As a brisbane supporter I like the friday night games because I can hit the bars after the game but wouldn't mind some damn sunday arvo games every now and then.

The Broncos always request Sunday afternoon games so blame the NRL. Also, in regards to crowds, surely been shown live on free to air every week would encourage people to just sit at home and not go to the game, yet they continue to get great crowds.

At the end of the day, Suncorp is a fantastic league ground which people want to go to, and the atmosphere it makes for even better television which is only going to translate into better ratings.
