I have no idea but reading between the lines we don't want to pay the amount if we take up the option because it's too high. We want a long term contract on more reasonable dollars.

This is my point. I think both parties are trying to get a mutual agreed amount.

The way I see it, if we don't want to pay 900k for the mutual offer for 2027 then that allows him to look elsewhere right now.
That is the problem with mutual offers and other clauses similar to them.
I think 800k and a three year deal would benefit both.

The way I see it is that if we go through with the option then he gets top dollars and could leave the following year. If that was going to happen we'd be better off trying out some other options.

Of course mate, since November 1.
The mutual offer includes the 2027 season however I haven't seen the actual figure for 2026.
Lets say it's well below that like the same or close his original contract.
They could be negotiating next year to round up then round down.
That's why I thought 800k for 3 year might benefit both parties... thoughts?

I think that is a fair number for both parties but let's wait and see what happens. Maybe we want a longer contract. I can see him being a pretty good player for a number of years and he has been pretty robust as well.

The Tigers should work out how much they value him and how much he is worth and then make a fair deal.

As I said Shredo, he can start talking to other clubs as of 1 Nov like everyone else not signed for 2027.
He cannot sign elsewhere for 2026 though nor can any other club formally register him without Tigers’ release or expiry nor can they formally make him an offer.
It's that last part that should be scrapped because you can't police it.
If you scrap it, the NRL should reintroduce a longer cooling of period of up to say 12mths.
The Bulldogs are the only club to indicate they are interested in Bula so he can reunite with his close friend Lachlan Galvin.

I agree with not having Turuva at fullback, he was very shaky, especially under the high ball.

Bula is now an international rep player too, he gets a bonus now which is paid by the NRL BUT it is not included in the cap.
He can attract higher contract offers
and often get performance clauses in their contracts.
If Bula, makes the finals this year, he can attract bonuses or upgrades but that's in the cap.
I'd be happy to give Bula a back ended contract if our cap isn't already loaded in 2027-29.
So we offer Bula,
700k 2026
800 - 2027
900 - 2028
This works if we have players on big money that we don't want to resign beyond 2026 or a couple of players jointly that we can replace with some of these young guns coming through in the later years.
Also these payments are mostly covered by the cap increases.
It's no good if we have several players on the same system because if their contract upgrades falls on the same date we are in for a lot of hurt, big $.
That's why we need to stagger contracts.

Bulas a good player and I don’t want to lose him, but he’s not a guy you break the bank for. We didn’t take up the $900k option in his contract so we clearly don’t value him around that. I’d say he’s probably worth about $750-$800k but with shit club tax probably $800k. If his manager wants $900k+ I’d say let him go.

My concern with him is I don’t think his ceiling is ever going to be a top 3- 4 NRL fullback.

Every year a club debuts a young fullback who kills it. Theres plenty of guys in lower grades waiting for an opportunity, look at Longi and Gray this year. I think a bloke like Koula from Manly for instance would be a revelation at fullback.

We just signed the kid from Penrith for 3 years, obviously he’s unproven but looks the goods and was the best fullback in every grade he played growing up.

I doubt he goes to a club like saints unless they pay $1m or close to for him, if they do good luck to him. If it’s easts/dogs etc then yeah they probably get him cheaper.

If Bulla shows any sign of softness on the field Flanagan will lay into him in the sheds and he will won’t have anyone to hold his hand. He’s definately improved in the toughness dept just saying. Esp when things are not opening up for him. Why he hasn’t muscled up like lomax is beyond me..Ive always thought he was a victim of his own hype..anyway who knows, good luck to him

For sure. The fact that Moses hasn't used this to wrestle Bula away is unusual.
I still maintain that Bula is made from different fabric to that of Galvin. He has a better manner altogether.
If he does go, I'll be wishing him the best for these reasons.
I'd love him to stay as he and Walsh were ripping it apart at Keebra park and that is a good sign that Bula will be a gun in a year or two.

I’ll be fairly shocked if Bula leaves unless he gets a ‘can’t refuse’ offer elsewhere

I think he’s gone. I’m guessing Benji doesn’t want him for whatever combination of reasons. He’s been around enough fullbacks to make an informed decision on Bulla. at such a critical time in his coaching career. Big balls. Big call. I’m all for it. M won’t overrule Benji.
