Bulldog Will Hopoate will not play rugby league on Sundays for religious reasons

CANTERBURY Bulldogs star Will Hopoate will not play or train on Sundays because of his staunch devotion to his Mormon faith.

Hopoate will sit out three straight Sunday games in rounds 10, 11 and 12 against the Wests Tigers, Roosters and Canberra Raiders and is unsure whether he will play in the grand final if the Bulldogs go through to the decider.

The NSW State of Origin star has the full backing of coach Des Hasler and his teammates, whom he informed of his decision at a team meeting at Belmore this week.

If I was a Bulldogs fan or player I know what I would be saying to him. Either you play or we don't want you.

Hopoate potentially could miss five games for the 'dogs this season including the grand final. If he decides to play in the grand final then he should play in every other game played on a Sunday.

I assume the dogs will be docking his pay accordingly, although if it started affecting the bottom line (and thus the church's income too since they skim his salary) I imagine they'd find a convenient dispensation for him like they did for Folau when he was going to give up millions to do his Mormon mission.

Will also be interesting to see how much his faith will be tested if they ever make a grand final. Will he just sit it out?

There we have it.
Every player ever is going to hell for playing sport on a Sunday.
And we're probably all going to hell too for watching it.

Lol @ he doesn't know if he will play the GF. He will certainly play if they make it.

Did he sit out sundays for parra? If not, why is this year different?

Just as big an issue is him skipping Sunday training.
Will his teammates are slogging it away in preparation for their next match he is sitting on his arse.

Unbelievably, a bloke has a belief (I don't care what that is) to stand by his faith and is getting verbally belted by posters.

You pricks are the stone throwers in history.

Good luck to him for having the nutz to stand by what he believes in.

Religion is stupid and evil. It should be laughed at every chance we get.

The Mormon religion is one of the more wacky beliefs. Jehovah witnesses are up there as well. Can someone tell me what Jehovah actually witnessed.

Yet no mention about this issue last year.

Maybe Parra and Manly wouldn't let him. Or the 2016 edition Book of Mormon added this new condition.
