Bummer - Dariarse has just announced his retirement.

I was so looking forward to Dariarse playing 16 plus games this year so his very expensive Donks contract renewal automatically kicked into effect for the 2021 season.

Now he has gone and announced that this, the 2020 season is to be his last.

Bummer that.

Oh well, they can't take the 58 to NIL Finals defeat away from me. That one is a long term keeper.

No body at the Donks can wave their arms up and down like Dariarse can

Seems we have one season of joy left.

Wonder when the talk of medical retirement begins.....

Well I think he has been given bad advice about this. He didn't need to announce it until the end of the season, if he gets a career ending injury he would have got the full 2 years, I wonder by him announcing, if an injury occurred, they may say "Well you weren't playing anyway, so you don't get next year's pay"
I dunno, any legal minds out there who could shed some light on this hypothetical?

Call moi a cynic but I reckon that someone might of been induced by way of some kind of "who knows what" to make certain decisions this time of the year.

Just saved Seibold from the hassle of counting how many games to play Dariarse in to avoid him playing on in '21. There was a clause in this years contract that he had to play a certain number of games to be allowed to play his final year next year. If only Duges and Moylan had the same clauses.

I'm not a legal mind, but I think there are a few business motives behind making this announcement early. Broncos can start succession planning and have a better idea of where they are placed salary cap wise, Darius can start publicising his retirement and start spruiking for cushy media jobs, he can also kick start planning for some kind of testimonial event to top up his coffers. Also added publicity for the Broncos.

They can spend that $950K freed up on chasing Dugan now. He’d fit in well at the Normanby Hotel in Brisbane.

probably still getting paid out most or all of his contract for 2021 just won't be included under the cap...

And ..... (Andrew) GEE how could the Donks ever do that and expect to get away with it.

Only reason he would be doing it is a deal of some sorts - I can only hope he has a post career spoken word tour down the East coast - which would abruptly come to a halt around Newcastle, maybe Cessnock. They love him there

Everyones a winner here.
Seibold dont want darius. More young talent at the broncs than a big Day Out - and Boyds holding them up

"Darius...you retire a year early and we will pick you in first grade this year.
You go around in 2021 and its 2 years at Redcliffe.
Your choice."

I’m hoping it’s a ploy by Dariarse to make sure he plays enough games and changes his mind and takes the extra year option. :joy:

Now that would be hilarious.

But I don't think dari-arse is the sharpest knife in the Donkeys drawer so I'd say it won't happen like that.

He was giving Motivational talks to young Gympie ( Gymps ? ) high students last week so maybe sees big future as motivational speaker. I think Shadow boxer is correct though in saying he might not be popular round newcastle . Might get a gig at a stains gathering .
