Calls for Smith's scalp to mount with latest thrashing

Calls for Parramatta coach Brian Smith's sacking look set to reach a crescendo after the Eels were thrashed 33-6 by the West Tigers in front of a record Leichhardt Oval crowd today - their fifth straight National Rugby League defeat.

Fans and Parramatta great Brett Kenny had already been calling for Smith to go after the Eels were booed off their home ground following last week's 37-6 loss to a St George Illawarra side missing up to 12 regular first graders.

Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald insisted then that the club would honour the remaining two years on Smith's contract, reportedly worth $375,000 a season.

But the fans are getting restless and have planned a rally at the Eels' next home game in a fortnight to call for Smith's removal.
The handful of Parramatta faithful who ventured to Leichhardt Oval today were brandishing positive banners.

But there were few positives today for Smith after the Tigers ran in six tries to one, including a hattrick to winger Luke Covell, to make their third straight win, the first time they have achieved this feat since the joint venture's inaugural season in 2000.

The win was the biggest by the West Tigers over the Eels - surpassing their 22-16 result in 2002.

And all in front of a ground-record 18,883-strong crowd.

Everything that could have gone wrong did for the Eels today - they lost the ball against the scrum feed, kicked the ball out on the full from the re-start after yet another Tigers try and bombed what looked like two certain four pointers.

Parramatta halfback Chris Thorman inexplicably dropped the ball over the line in the 43rd minute and winger Ash Graham bombed a certain Eels try when he dropped the ball with the line open a minute later.

The Tigers led 18-0 at the main break, scoring a try on the halftime siren to pivot Benji Marshall off a Scott Prince cross field kick.

The signs were ominous from the outset when Covell bagged a double by the ninth minute and Parramatta didn't touch the ball until the seventh minute when already trailing 8-0.

Covell notched his hattrick in the 48th minute while a Prince field goal and a Robert Mears try blew the deficit out to 29-0 before the Eels finally got on the board when Michael Witt crossed in the 67th minute.

The Eels' agony was extended by a try to centre Shane Elford in the 70th minute.

This is to the Smith and Fitzy supporters still left (bear in mind I am not dissing; I am 50-50 myself, but it gets lower with each pathetic display):

(1) If Fitz is such a good businessman, why can he not see we need to improve drastically in order to be profitable?

I love my Eels, win, lose or draw. But I will not pay my hard earned to go watch garbage - I'll watch it on TV isntead.

(2) Why does Brian insist with the same defensive patterns?

(3) Whas has changed since the first few rounds? Obviously Cannings and Cayless and Vaealiki are out, but why were we then the third best attacking team, and now we must be second last?

(4) WHY DOES HE LEAVE HINDY ON FOR 80 MINUTES IF THE TEAM RESORT TO HIM AND ONLY HIM TO TRY AND SPARK SOMETHING? He played SoO 4 days ago. Surely his go to man would be a different player? But no - he sist back and watched Hindy make 20+ hit-ups and 50 tackles, despite the fact he is the only one trying.

Name another go to man....I cab't find one worthy of that title at the moment :(

What defensive pattern do we play? - the catch them from behind method? - I seriously don't know what we play.

I think we have got into a losing rut....confidence is rock bottom....shit happens and the heads go down straight away....like the early Tigers try - they shouldn't even have had the ball - blatant knock on, but its missed and then they score a try and the confidence goes even lower (if that is possible).

Cayless (when fit); Lyon (if he ever comes back); Tsoulos, Cannings.

If not, then don't play Hindmarsh.

It sounds dumb, but some of these idiots need to learn that we cannot rely on him to do everything for us; he is one of the only forwards actually earning every cent of his pay cheque.

I don't know what we play, but we leave MASSIVE gaps everywhere.

How could we go from a great defensive unit about 3 or 4 years ago under the same coach and coaching staff and with the same central, core players to THIS abomination?

I agree 100%.

But how do we address it?

God knows Brian has no clue.

He leaves him on because he is the only one giving it something.

I would love paraborn to provide us with the stats between Vella, Wagon and Hindmarsh today. Forget the others.
They are the big three. Then lets just see who we are getting value for money out of.

My money is on Hindmarsh. The other two nancy boys are just robbing us.

I know why.

But what are the moron (except for Tsoulos and Stapleton) forwards going to do without Hindy?

It's pathetic.

And they call Newcastle a one-man team ...

Funny, then, how that one man is gone, yet they still have enough talent and pride to be extremely competitive ...

Go Hindy

I rest my case.

I know Hindy is a freak, but the rest of you forwards should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves.

Although Wagon's stats aren't as great as Hindy's, there's still no shame in making 40+ tackles. I thought he played OK today, he even seems to have remembered how to pass a football again.
