Can anyone get to the airport at 6am tomorrow? *long*

Kali Meehan flies into Sydney tomorrow morning at 6am from LA. Yesterday I was told that Kali has really taken to the Eels and the Club would be very keen to get behind him.

For those who don't know, Kali is a Wyong boy who fought for the WBO Heavyweight Championship on Sunday. He lost, but it is the general opinion that he was screwed over. Kali walked to the ring in a Parra jersey, and fought in Parra socks. His jersey had 18 on the back, because he was our unofficial 18th man for Sundays game.

This is stuff you probably already know, so here is some stuff you may not.

Kali was a bloody good boxer from the Central Coast, who had done some sparring in the US with some prominent boxers. His only loss so far in his career (http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=14560) was to Danny Williams. But fighting for the World Title takes months of dedicated preperation, and you need some money coming in during those times when you can't work. So this bloke offers to pay Kali's wages while he trains etc, on the condition that he went and trained with the Parramatta Eels. So Kali ends up in the hands of Hayden Knowles, and gets to know a little about the Eels. When Kali heads over to the US to promote the fight, Hayden heads over with him. It was Hayden who got Don King to mention the Eels (which btw, is a huge thing), and got Kali the jersey, number 18 etc.

Word has been, since the fight, that Kali will most definately get the chance to hang around the top of the Heavyweight division, and King has already said he plans to use Kali in a big heavyweight card at the end of the year. Kali has a realistic chance to get his hands on that belt sometime in the future.

So it's not hard to see why the Eels would be interested in supporting Kali. Part of the Club supporting Kali is the fans supporting him. So, back to the beginning..........

Kali gets in from LA tomorrow on a United Airlines flight at 6am. Now obviously most people will find this hard because of work and families, but if anyone can get their jerseys and rock up to see the future champ and honourary Eel arrive back home, this would be most appreciated :D

King backs Kali and Eels
By Grantlee Kieza

NOT long ago Kali Meehan was collecting garbage for Drummoyne council but yesterday with electric-haired fight promoter Don King leading the cheers he was centre stage in Las Vegas promising to clean out the heavyweight division.

Meehan will become the first Australian-based heavyweight in nearly 100 years to fight for a world crown when he meets hard-hitting WBO champ Lamon Brewster in Las Vegas on September 4.
And yesterday King - declaring the embattled Parramatta Eels to be his favourite football team - said Meehan was another Aussie underdog ready to kick on.

"Kali Meehan is coming to bring the world heavyweight title back to Australia," King told 2GB's Ray Hadley yesterday.

"He's the Thunder From Down Under and I want all the Australians to be at their TVs if they can't come to [Las Vegas] to see the fight live and in living colour."

And as a reward for Meehan training with Parramatta, King boomed: "Eels that's my team. They are the top in rugby, the top in football and the top in whatever they do. That's my team - the Eels."

When told by Hadley that the Eels were running second last in the competition and couldn't beat anyone at the moment, King replied: "They're gonna get new thrust and they're gonna rock like never before."

Meehan quit boxing in 2002 over career frustrations and played a season as a rugby league prop with Wyong, earning selection in the Central Coast rep team. Yesterday he said his manager Ted Allen had worked a miracle to pluck him from nowhere to fight for a world title.

"This is the chance all fighters dream of," said the Auckland born giant who stands 195cm and weighs 112kg. "Fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world in Las Vegas in a fight promoted by Don King."
