Canadians to Aus

Here's an article I found about a couple of Canadian university players going to Australia. Is this the NBL or a lower level?

Former Ravens headed Down Under

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...hot off the wire

Former Carleton Ravens Josh Poirier and Paul Larmand are headed to Australia to pursue their basketball careers.

Melbourne, Australia's Kilsyth Cobras is who Poirier will be joining. As well as playing ball, he'll be coaching in youth clinics and camps. Josh has played for Team Canada in the World University Games in Korea '03 and for Carleton in the 26th Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan '04. He won the Bronze medal at FISU and Silver at Jones Cup while repping his country.

Larmand is a CIS second Team All-Canadian who will be joining Ballarat "Neiborhood Cable" Miners. Paul has also been named Director of Coaching and Player Development for the entire Ballarat Basketball organization. He'll play for them as well in the ABA. Larmand, at the 26th Jones Cup, won the tournament scoring title with a 20ppg average and was selected as an All-Star.

We have NBL, then

SEABL which is SE Australia, WA state league is pretty high as well.

This is about 3rd tier, regional Basketball.

Then if they aren't skilled enough to play this level, they usually play AFL.

Have there been any Aussies who have played high level basketball and AFL? Are the skill sets at all similar? (I remember reading league fans compare AFL to basketball, in an unflattering way.)

I believe Ryhs Carter (who played for the Victoria Giants) is trying his hand at AFL this season and Dean Brogan (who played for the Adelaide 36ers) won a premiership with the Port Adelaide Power last season are the ones who spring to mind.

While on the topic of footballers who are talented basketballers, I believe both former Dragon Anthony Mundine and current Dragon Ben Creagh had the option open to pursue NBL careers before opting for professional football instead.

Souths signing from Cronulla Michael Greenfield was supposed to have been a pretty handy basketball player before switching about 4 years ago.
