That Newcastle bloke who claims Fielden has'nt proved anything yet is an absolute idiot.

Fielden was the best forward on show in the Ashes last year and outplayed Webcke in all three games.

This year he's backed it up again with top performances in both GB games, he got MoM against Australia FFS.

He's a better player than Morley and won't be as expensive in the penalty stakes.

To say he needs to show that he can mix it with Ryles, Civieciva and Mason is just stupid he's head and shoulders better than the three of them.

Only Webcke is a challenge to Fielden as the best prop in the world.

What I would like to know is who the hell writes a contract with an England get out clause on your playmaker of all people? Thats just ridiculous that Canberra management would do such a thing. Canberra supporters should be lynching their management that they would write such a clause that allows Mclinden to legally screw them over months and months after they could hope to sign a decent replacement.

Unfortunatley I think its destined for failure for Canberra. The halves are just recipe for disaster. Jason Smith as someone rightly commented earlier was an excellent second rower/lock who filled in at 5/8 when needed. And that was many years ago now. You have the halfback spot between Withers and Carney. If they pair Withers and Smith you will have the most boring uncreative half 5/8 combo of all time and won't score a point. Their best chance seems to be with 18 year old Carney who could turn out to be as good as they say but my fear for Canberra is that they are rushing an 18 year old with very limited experience into first grade well before his time. IF carney burns out and can't handle the pressure it may ruin his game for good rather than slowly introducing him when he is ready.

Tell me were you the team that blooded two young halves in two seasons Firman and Head

Chippo, my post wasn't an attack on the Raiders, all I was saying is that it would be a shame to ruin an extremely promising talent by pushing him into first grade well before his time. If you want to look at the Firman and head, Firman was 21 and Head was 22 in the year they broke into first grade. They had already pleayed 3 seasons of Flegg and PL. Carney at 19, in 2005, and 4 first grade appearences to his name will be very young and inexperienced for a first grade halfback . It may work out and he may go on to be a superstar of the game, or he may be that shattered by the experience of getting belted each week so much that it ruins his confidence and he is never the same again. Elliott should give him more experience off the bench before thrusting that much responsibility on him.

I see what you're saying, but the fact of the matter is that McLinden demanded this clause in his contract. If he didn't have it, I highly doubt he would have re-signed last year. So, in a sense, maybe we're lucky we got him for one more year than we might not have otherwise... if that makes sense.

Wouldn't Canberra have been better to let him go then and look for a replacement rather than go one day to the next wondering is today the day he receives an ESL offer? Could McLinden have chosen a worse time for the Raiders to walk out, after most clubs have already finalised their 05 playing roster. I don't think you will find any other club in the competition that would let their playmaker and halfback negotiate a clause that allows them to walk out whenever an ESL club comes knocking on their door. Could you imagine Johns or Gower with such a clause?

Borat, could you imagine McLinden being held in as high regard as Johns and Gower? As much as I love the bloke, he was not even a certainty to be in the 17 next season. Most of us certainly had difficulty wondering where to place him.

Also, your analogy about Carney assumes that the Raiders will be getting belted each week. I wouldn't be so sure. Carney definately has the skills needed to make the grade, he just needs the opportunity.

I cant see what all the fus ia about.Mc Clindin was crap.He would ahve one great game, followed by 5 crap ones.I think ELliot has got it perfectly right, got ride of a dud that has been there for years and allowed the spot to got to someone who is an absolute goer(Withers) or a youngun with hue potential....

No use wasting these guys behind someone as ordinary as Mc Clinden....

Cheers.

Spot the errors.

But yes, I do agree with you to an extent. He was very hot and cold. On a good day, he could match it with the best in the NRL, but on a bad day he was a dud. Unfortunately most of his games he underperfomed

Ah well bring on Carney, J. Smith and Withers.

I said he may be a superstar or it may ruin him. Look teenagers like Fittler and Brasher proved that it can be done if if he does turn out to be as good as you say then this will help him. But the flipside is the immediate pressure that is now being put on him to resurrect Canberra's fortune may take its toll. I didn't say it was garuanteed that Canberra was going to get belted I just said if they did it may destroy his confidnce. And that would be a shame if he is as talented as Canberra supporters say he is.
