:-k Vella the best defender? Maybe that's what's been going wrong in the past two years...

Maybe Vella's presence was commanding in 2001, but my memory of games since then is that a lot more people slip past Micky than past Nathan C?

Either way, we've got loads of forward depth, and as long as they maintain form, the form guys get picked, and they all defend their guts out, things should be looking up.

vella is a glue. the adhesive in the middle

look at any game last year where we were continually exploited around the ruck and i bet vella wasn't on the field

for some reason he also never performs off the bench

no body is questioning Vella's defence, i just feel that Cayless is a better defender, espeically when it comes to front on defence.

Take it from me, Vella will not be with us next year. Stapleton, Cannings, Armit, Tsoulos is the future.

Can't see Vella leaving he is signed till the end of 2005 and if he leaves unless the club he signs for pays his entire contract Parra will have to waste salary cap $$$ on a player not even at the club.

In 2003 Parra were paying Buettner over 150,000 to play for the Tigers

I thought this year was a contract year for Vella? All the talk about why he should be fired up and what not...

We need Vella to play to his formidible capabilities, like in 2001. Otherwise I think it's bench time, as there are others there now who can match and exceed what he has produced for most of 02/03.

I'm still getting over the suggestion that Cayless would have been shown the door if he was not Captain

Sweet jesus are you for real!!!!!!! With all due respect, Vella is a very good defender, but nothing on Cayless. Vella's weakness is that he is slow to get back in the line, and is often caught on the back foot. He also has a tendancy to grab at smaller players, when he should hit with his shoulder. Vella is also no where near as good as Cayless at putting a player to ground and Cayless can tackle one-on-one, Vella can not. And that is why you will find Cayless in the back row this year. Because we need him on the field longer as he is one of our best players, and because he is more mobile/versatile than Vella.
