Car Tire Replacement

Messages

My car has done approx 53000km and I took it in for a service and they advised me to get the tires changed as the tread was low.

How do you check tread depth and also would this be normal to get the tires changed at approx 53km.

some dont last 20K, 53K is not bad depending on the quality of the tyre or how much you paid for them

if the tread is thinner than a match head, they generally need changing

I've got 4mm in my head as "replacement" time. But I can't remember where I heard it or if I may have just made that up...

I'm probably going to have to replace all 4 of the ones on my car. Making sure that nothing makes it unroadworthy. Had to replace a few parts last week.

There are usually markers in each groove pattern, a raised bit maybe a few mm higher than the bottom of the tread, randomly spaced.....if youre getting near level with that you need new tyres

You should get new tyres instead of tires...

Save yourself a packet on freight :sarcasm:

I always buy them two at a time, because the front ones always wear out faster than the back ones - unless you are a hoon who spins your tyres of course.
People who sell tyres will tell you you should buy four and chuck away two tyres with 20k wear still in them, but i always have them put the back wheels on the front and the new ones on the back. The reason being that back tyres wear more evenly, so your new tyres will last longer if you use them on the back for a time.
The spare tyre should also be rotated - get the spare changed as one of your two new ones, and use your best old one as the new spare.

If you want to have four new tyres each time, you should rotate your tyres every 20k - just ask the guy doing your service to move the front to the back and visa versa - will take 2 minutes when they have the car on the hoist.
