Very sad. When he was on top of his game he was fearsome. May he RIP.

A truly horrible disease that I witnessed first hand in my family. Shreds you of life and robs you of your dignity. Hoping a cure isn't too far.

He died following a fall at home so might’ve hit his head or something that finished the job a bit early

celebrate the guy! With his days numbered he set up a foundation that may help others with the condition he is suffering, not at all for himself but in the hope that others could be helped in the future.

Sadness of his death aside this is a really positive story and one that reflects how great a man he is and how rugby league can be a positive for the community.

Sadly the average life span between diagnosis to death is about 18 months to 2 years.

It wasn't that long ago he was on Fox, with Yvonne Sampson interviewing him. He was brave to do an interview under those circumstances. That deserves a tonne of respect.

There’s definitely speculation at least that it could be related to CTE in some cases. Gehrig had multiple concussions from getting hit in the head in the days before batting helmets.

Some interesting points in that. Pretty damning in terms of the increased frequency of MND and similar conditions, but also notable that the former athletes also outlived the control group on the whole so its arguable that playing sport at their level is still beneficial overall, and part of the increased incidence of these conditions is down to a lower incidence of other causes of death.

And that takes us back to CTE. High impact sports with high rates of concussion lead to greater risk of developing CTE. New research has prompted discussions regarding the potential link between CTE and the development of MND. We have yet to determine a biological link but there seems to be epidemiological evidence to suggest there is increased risk in certain sports. NFL players are seen to be 4 times more likely to develop MND in their lifetime. That figure could be as much as 15 times higher for rugby players.
