Wow. It's not enough that the board pretty much said he and Reni were unwanted because they were signed by a "dead man walking" coach. Now you all come out and bag the bloke before he's even had a full off-season with us. Classy.

I can see why you're all in two minds about his signing, but give him a break - surely he deserves the benefit of the doubt, at least until he starts playing?
Agreed, already been through the bagging of Webb and Maitua, silly thread

I agree 100%. But my point is he hasn't played yet.

Hiney, the joke was funny. I'm just kinda puzzled by everyone sinking the boot in when the bloke hasn't even played a game for us yet.

I'll admit that I'm not particularly excited about his signing. But he could turn out to be a master signing, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he plays.

Mate has he been a master signing for anyone yet? Except for a few really good games here and there in his whole life of 1st grade, which got him his rep jumpers, what has the guy really done consistently for any team he has played for? Sure we can all see the raw talent when he decides to use it, but how often has that been?

He has brought all the public criticism he receives onto himself. People should not get all defensive when others bag out a seasonal under achiever who has well and truly massively let down the mates, teams and fans that he has played for, not to mention himself on many, many occasion. I mean even Bennett could not get him to fire consistently.

He in my opinion lacks that inner desire to achieve when it gets to hard and by that I mean hard in the sense of the long term mental and physical demands that professional sport demands from its athletes, but he dreams and wants to be a STAR. So as soon as he plays well and receives the accolades he so covets, he gets lazy again and drops off from the mind set and intensity that got him there in the first place. Then as he has shown us all time and time again, he is the sort of bloke that can't get back again that easily and ends up languishing or just going through the motions till he gats dropped to state cup.

I for one, as I'm sure most others, hope the can wakeup to himself and pull his big fat finger out of his arse and perform as well as we all know he can, not for the obligatory game or two and then rap himself massively as has done in the past and then fail epically there after, but throughout the entire season, which by the way is what he is paid well to do.

Just my opinion.

The Cowboys.

In 2004 at the Broncos, Webb was immense in limited game time. In 2005 for the Cowboys he was the best forward in the game until he got injured. And then suspended for punching.

I guess you have a point.

But Webb at his best has always been one of the most destructive players in the NRL, and for average wage that's the kind of front-rower you can carry on your bench every week.

Don't underestimate the intimidation factor either. That's something we've been light-on for as a club for a long time now, and I'm sure has contributed to our lack of success.

I'm sure that's behind the siginings of Webb and Maitua.

Personally, I think Webb will be very effective for short bursts. He can get us going forward. Surely he can do at least as well as Cayless in the go forward department.

LOL Come on they did not say that! They were just informing everyone, that regardless of what the media says, they leave recruitment up to the coach. Do you honestly believe that the Board would let a coach hire players that they did not want?

I agree with the rest of your sentiments. Let's not bag Carl because it'd be embaressing if he came on here and saw what we're writing. He's one of our players now and we need to stand behind him and give him the support he deserves!!!!

Your first paragraph has me confused. Although I am often confused.

I do agree with not bagging the bloke just yet. We should wait 2 or 3 rounds.

Exactly. That has been my argument to ne1 who has bagged the Webb signing. Cayless was hardly destroying teams with his go forward this year - he was doing ok but not setting the world on fire. In hindsight possibly played 1 season too many.

All Webb has to do is come off the bench and make similar metres and we have not lost nething because obviously 2 of poore/fui/mannah will be our starting props

Well with everything going on in the media and discussions about how the Board interferes with recruitment and Anderson didn't have control over the players they hired, that was the Board's way of saying ' hey he did have control, he was behind the hiring of Maitua and Webb'. Obviously they're going to have to approve the signing so i don't think that them saying DA had reigns over who he hired, necessarily means that they didn't want those players. That's the comment from Eelmentary i was responding to.

I'd say he probably played 2 seasons too many:
Cayless Av.Mins/Runs/Metres
2005: 56/16/131
2006: 45/14/112
2007: 53/17/138
2008: 54/15/116
2009: 47/13/105
2010: 46/13/103

All Webb has to do is come off the bench and make similar metres and we have not lost nething because obviously 2 of poore/fui/mannah will be our starting props

Webb will be much better than Cayless in attack. While he might offer less offloads, he will make more metres per run, and bring some linebreaks (a massive momentum changer especially early in the tackle count). I'd say overall Cayless is a better defender than Webb, however Big Carl has the intimidation factor that Cayless never had. Webb might be something of a liability in defence, and you can be sure that oppositions will run a lot from dummy half when he's on the field. But we're lucky enough to have top-line defensive props in Mannah and Poore who will hopefully take up some of the slack.

But I think Webb will be awesome in attack next year.
