That was the 18-0 win vs Aussie in 1985 - a great victory.

Carlaw Park was a special ground and sometwhere like Mt Smart does not even stack up i.e. they couldn't have a Mt smart Diehards FB page!

What a shame that Carlaw never got that upgrade to be the Warriors home ground. I first went there in 93 or 94 for a trail match between Manly and Canberra and both teams bought their stars. I think Canberra won, I was cheering for Manly but I didn't care about the result, I just had an awesome time.
No doubt there were future Warriors players playing in a Lion Red Cup trail game and a ARL trail match too

If only the ARL didn't need the cash at the time and had held on to the park ...sigh

Great memories. Still remember the stink from the mud.

Still remember John Ribot breaking our hearts in 1985. Not all great memories!

Also, I'm trying to locate vision of Frank Tinitelia's try for Otahuhu in the '83 cup final. You have to see it to believe it.

And it sparked a thousand imitators in playgrounds up and down NZ.

We had Teina, who at 13/14 was about 6 ft 3 in and 17 stone (a bit of creative licence here but not too much). He terrorised us.

There was one huge difference between him and Big Frank though, Teina would bump off about the same amount of tacklers (about eight) but he'd only make a metre or two (too much lateral movement unfortunately).

In '83 league was flying high due to the Kiwis upset win over the Kangaroos, broadcast live from Lang Park. I recall the '83 cup final from Carlaw Park was live too. Tony Palmer did the commentary for TV One.

Frank couldn't have had a bigger audience and I think it earned him a test call up versus PNG soon after.

Aah. Tony Palmer. Proof there was dope involved with league even then.
He was a Muppet.

You'll remember his TVNZ speciality was motor racing. When league was given its due in the early '80s the network was caught out and needed a commentator. He obviously got the call up.

I remember my father blaspheming during the test series v Australia in 1985. The first test was in Brisbane, which Nine covered. Instead of going with the entertaining Darryl Eastlake (and Jack Gibson?) TVNZ flew Palmer over. He was dreadful, often out of sync with the action (not his fault) but without the knowledge or flair needed.

I don't think he had a co-commentator either (el cheapo TVNZ), which meant he had to fill the airwaves himself. He struggled and it ruined the unique atmosphere of a Lang Park test.

He did 1986 and 1987, but not sure he was there for the '88 WC Final at Eden Park?
