Carmont to take a pay cut

Knights Winger/Center will take a pay cut for the last season of his contract to stay with the Knights next year. He was going to be offloaded to another club but he will now stay with the Knights

Source?

Sounds good in theory, but I'm fairly sure his third-year-option was on the same pay as he has been on for the first two years. It doesn't make sense to have an option on your contract if you have to re-negotiate your pay... there would be no requirement on the club's part to offer him more than a basic rate of pay.

If they've managed to get him to take a paycut against a firm contract for next year then well done.

I would say that Carmonts manager is the dill for letting this happen.

Perhaps the money was needed for Smith.

Unless Carmont has an eye for the future and thinks a paycut may stand him in good sted for beyond 06.

We'll wait and see whether this is true.

Maybe his trying to stay in their good graces in an attempt to snare a contract after this year.

Hopefully his on the 100k-120k he should have been in the first instance.

We will see.

I don't believe it for a second. Why would a bloke on $170,000 a year want to axe his own contract? By all accounts he had the option of extending the contract into a third year. An extension of the contract would, in any normal case, involve merely remaining on the same salary for another year -- $170K. For Carmont to accept a reduced contract would mean he signed a contract that put more incentive on him playing the first two seasons than the last season.

Answer this: why would the club sign Carmont, an inexperienced and unproven player at the time, to a top-heavy three-year contract?

It would be great if it were true, but unless there is something significant there that we don't know, I don't believe for a second that we'll be signing him for a overly-reduced fee.

Carmonts extra money next year was conditional on him playing a certain number of games this year (which he achieved) The club has persuaded him to stay on the same terms next year as this, and as reward for doing that they will pay the bonus by rewarding him with an extra year contract (taking him to 2007) with the bonus paid that year. He has had nibbles from Souths and the Storm but isn't keen on moving so he is inclined to accept the offer made by the club. That was in todays Newcastle Herald.

Considering the blokes form, hes dead lucky to have played as many games in FG as he has.

Do we have any idea on what his contract is worth, please tell me that the 07 contract is for the value of the 06 bonus not another 170k.

Can I assume that for arguments sake his contract was 85k and another 85k if he played 20 FG games. Therefore the club pays him 85k this year, and the other 85k in 07 as a contract extension?

Yes Nuffy, I think you could safely say that it is along those lines. So he would play next year for basic pay (as he did this season) then his bonus year would kick in in 2007. In reality I would say Carmont realises that his best shot in the NRL is here, so really he is taking his best option. Soutyhs might have thrown more money at him but who wants to go there? The Storm would only offer him a basic contract I think.

I dare say you've hit the nail on the head there Tony. Considering he was plucked out of the Tooheys Cup. Back in 2003 he was playing for Raymond Terrace. But I do wonder in would he be entitled to have his contract upgraded if he became a rep player, cuz unless I'm mistaken wasn't he in New Zealand's train on squad last year?

I would say that the latest "news story" is for Ian Schubert so they think he is only getting $100k. How else could you lot have signed Craig Smith when one week ago there was no money let. Now you'se are talking about signing Lowrie and many other top 25 players. Mind you Min Wage is $37,000 for a top 25 player so Smith must have signed for $33k even if thats true about Carmont

Perhaps he just didnt want to live in Sydney or Melbourne? I know I wouldn't...

Im not sure if this is good news or not - if we are paying him 170k in '07 he better be consistently excellent by then... but on the same token, at least we arent paying him huge money next year. I think im a little confused!

I thought when we signed him from Terrace it was for 1 year, then following his first year we snared him for a 2 year contract with the second year being optional, hence the $170,000-odd. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Why would Souths, who have potential centres in the two Mac's, Hegarty, Gordon & Elford want a nuffy like Carmont - especially if he is on $170k

Talking about "past" glory and injury prone, how is Gidley these days. Yeah, centre is definitely the Knights strength - Gidley & Carmont great combo that

Doesn't matter if we have Mark Gasnier or Paul Carrige at centre, Johns will make them look f**king good.

Can't even sign a decent half or 5/8.

Souths. All they have are (distant) past glories!
