looks like there might be some justice after all:
Gallen faces brawl charge

By Brent Read
July 16, 2007
SHARKS forward Paul Gallen and several of his teammates will come under the microscope of the match review committee following a wild brawl in the second half of Saturday night's loss to the Sydney Roosters.
On an evening Roosters coach Brad Fittler marked his elevation to the top job with a 23-12 victory, Gallen appeared to headbutt Roosters forward Shane Shackleton, prompting players from both sides to stream in and trade blows at the Sydney Football Stadium.
The Sharks and New South Wales backrower could face a striking charge and, given his poor judicial record, a stint on the sidelines.
Cronulla has lost six of its past seven games, sliding out of the top eight with defeat on Saturday night. Gallen may not be the only Sharks player charged.
Winger Misi Taulapapa raced in to take part in the brawl while halfback Anthony Watts was also involved, leaving both open to contrary conduct charges.
Shackleton said he didn't think there was much in the incident but suggested Gallen and five-eighth Greg Bird had lost their way as the Sharks became frustrated with their inability to break down the Roosters' defence.
"They're pretty volatile, both of them," Shackleton said. "If you can put them off their game that's always a bonus.
"When he's (Gallen) blowing up like that, he's not thinking about his game. He went on with it. You can't back down."
Gallen refused to comment on the incident. However, the Sharks find themselves in a difficult position with a host of players sidelined and the team struggling to find form.
Captain Brett Kimmorley is still several weeks away from returning and the Sharks are labouring in attack, having scored only 94 points in their past seven games.
The Roosters, on the other hand, are suddenly a revitalised team under Fittler, finishing the weekend only two wins out of the top eight. They play Newcastle on Saturday night with memories still fresh of their late loss to the Knights at the Central Coast in round 12.
"We owe Newcastle one," Roosters captain Craig Fitzgibbon said.

It's a shame the judiciary has to do what the ref failed to do. I know it'd be unusual for 3 guys to be sin-binned all at once, but it was clearly the correct action in this situation.

At least this ref took some action - the week before Hayne completely missed Ben Ross's swinging arm in Cleal's face.

I haven't read every page, but....

With exception of the Rather lame attempt at headbutting, I say Gallen had every right to get up and "TRY" to belt him

I've watched the Replay twice now and Shackleton deserved what he got and should be sighted for the intentional Forearm/Elbow I've watched it and slowed it down on the DVD and it is cocked and launched as he falls.

Filthy turd.

since you went through that with a fine tooth comb, do the same with all of gayllen's tackles and i'm sure you'll come up with enough grubby plays to make hopoate proud.

As has already been said, Gallen would be in no position to cry foul about the elbow. Just witness any of his tackles in that game or any other game he plays. Then take a look at the Matt King swinging arm on Thurston in SOO3 last year. Did Thurston headbutt King then get up and start swinging?

Using your logic, one could mount a defence for Danny Williams.

Paul Gallen is an idiot.

Gallen, Taluapapa and Watts will all get a minimum one week suspension.

Funny how the Sharks CEO is able to admit the players deserved the punishment, but Greg Bird comes out and says it's unfair.
Three brawling Sharks charged

July 16, 2007
SHARKS officials will view footage of a brawl in the club's loss to the Sydney Roosters before deciding whether to contest charges against three of their players at the NRL judiciary.
Skipper Paul Gallen, halfback Anthony Watts and winger Misi Talaupapa were hit with contrary conduct charges.
No Rooster was cited after the all-in brawl midway through the second half of the Sharks 23-12 defeat at the Aussie Stadium, angering injured Sharks five-eighth Greg Bird.
"So they were just fighting amongst themselves were they?" Bird asked when told of the charges.
"That's ridiculous when it was first instigated by an elbow in the face."
But Sharks boss Greg Pierce said he was more concerned about his own players' behaviour than the Roosters'.
"(The match review committee) said they looked at every player involved, every angle and they felt that what the Roosters players did didn't warrant being charged," Pierce said.
"We can't start worrying about the Roosters players, we've got to worry about our own, we're disappointed with our own players.
"They've been charged and for a club that's already got a large number of players out injured, (that's put us) under more unnecessary pressure.
"Players have got to learn that sometimes you've got to let the officials take control of the game."
The charges come at the worst possible time for the Sharks, who have lost six of their last seven matches.
The club's mounting injury list includes Brett Kimmorley (knee), Adam Dykes (leg), Luke Covell (ankle) and Dustin Cooper (ankle).
It swelled today with Bird ruled out for a month with a broken thumb, prop Jacob Selmes (knee) still being assessed and Brett Kearney suffering a recurrence of his troublesome strained quad.
Prop Ben Ross is already serving a suspension, until round 21, for breaking Bulldogs forward Kane Cleal's jaw.
New South Wales back rower Gallen was hit with a grade one charge for a headbutt on Roosters forward Shane Shackleton, the incident sparking the melee which involved all 26 players on the field.
Watts and Talaupapa were handed grade two charges for running in to join the fight; all three Sharks players facing a minimum one game ban with early guilty pleas.
Manly centre Steve Matai will miss two matches with an early plea after being charged with headbutting Wests Tigers second rower Chris Heighington in the Sea Eagles' 34-4 win on Friday night.
South Sydney halfback Jeremy Smith is facing a one-game ban for striking the head of a Parramatta opponent in yesterday's 18-12 loss to the Eels.
St George-Illawarra teenager Chase Stanley will escape suspension with an early plea after being charged with a grade one dangerous throw.

the sharks are in all sorts. With the poor form their hitting, coupled with injuries, suspensions and their run home they are a serious chance at beating last years losing streak
