Change to kickoff.

It may introduce some skill into kickoffs ala onside kicks in the NFL, but it does seem like sacrilege denying the spectacle of a complete and utter disregard for ones self preservation with a big bopper/ Fijian winger coming off the back fence into a wall of defenders.

How do we feel about it though, is this a knee jerk reaction or legitimately something the league could do to minimise serious damage being done?

Depends where the 7 tackle set starts from. Judging on previous stupid rule changes it will either be on the 20mt line or halfway.

Sick to death of bloody rule changes . Every year under the current administration there is a crop of them . The six again rule is a joke .
The 6 again rule is an embarrassment. The NRL is so out of touch it isn't even funny. They talk through the roof about player safety by changing every concussion rule and sin bins galore, but the 6 again is one of the worst for player safety. If this game was touch football and was made up of skinny endurance athletes then you wouldn't think too much of it, but NRL players are pretty much all (with a few exceptions) carrying a lot of muscle on their frame.

On top of this, making tackles nonstop is extremely frustrating due to the body-to-body contact and 'wrestle' aspect - and so by forcing players to run nonstop, technique sometimes goes out the window. That's why we saw Welch injure his achilles a few years ago, and why we're seeing so many non-contact ACL injuries and hammy tears. It also means that players' bodies break down a lot more throughout the year and could possibly shorten their careers due to all the wear and tear on the joints especially with all the muscle they're carrying, but the NRL is too stupid to realise that. Player safety my ass.

Rant over (might be my 3rd or 4th time ranting about this).

It will be interesting to see how kickers place and kick the ball off the tee to get variations in power, bounce, and the curve or travel of the ball along the ground. It will be a new science by round 10.

Is this not a massive leg-up to the attacking side?
Dumbest. Rule change. Ever.
Indeed. So the team who has just conceded points and is on the back foot now has to choose between a shorter kickoff and giving up territory or kicking long and giving a seven tackle set away. You can't make up a stupider rule.
Watch more and more teams rack up 50 points because their opponents can't find a way to wrestle back momentum.

p.s I'm all for supporting player welfare but there has to be a smarter way then this.
