Suncorp could sell out an England vs Australia. MCG will be a push but you never know if promoted the right way.

I wonder if this will happen again...

NRL flag outside AFL HQ. No sirree!
THE footy seasons — both for the AFL and the National Rugby League are over — but that doesn't mean the rivalry gets put on hold. The word is that the NRL, eager to promote the Australia-England World Cup clash in Melbourne on Derby Day weekend, persuaded Melbourne Events to fly 100 banners promoting the game throughout the city. Which it did, everywhere but outside AFL's Docklands headquarters, where eight were hoisted but the AFL demanded they be pulled down — and they were!

Besides, Melbourne needs a big clash.

The big difference between now and 2008 was that England and the English profile was almost anonymous back then. Now Sam Burgess, James Graham are well known figures to promote off and Wayne Bennett coming in as England coach gives them another angle to bounce off. Mal v Wayne doesn't happen very often.

England were also very competitive in Melbourne in 2014 and will run the Aussies close this year in the 4N.

The best thing that could happen leading into this World Cup is England winning the Four Nations. If that can't happen then at least England beating Australia in the Group stages will really help throw open the World Cup.

Things in the World Cup's favour for an MCG game:
- Victorians love events, especially World Cups, so they'll buy for that.
- They have access to the Ticket purchasers from the recent Origin match at the MCG
- They'll have over 12 months to promote the match
- The VEC will be paying a significant amount for a game of this profile

I am so happy about this.

The way the did the 13 WC was perfect, and now without having to wake up early it's even better.

Australian loss in ANZAC Test + End of Year Test, combined with England win in Four Nations would be best possible results leading into WC. A strong showing by Scotland wouldn't be bad either.

Prospect of games at MCG and Adelaide Oval are imposing due to their sheer size in not the most rugby league passionate areas. Although if we can get 90,000 to Origin at the MCG, don't see why we couldn't get 90+ again.

Victorians watching Origin is a lot different to them watching internationals.

10 mill for 5 weeks that's not bad... stick that up your coight aru/afl

7 obviously has more foresight than the home of rugby league. 9 turned down 2013 because there was little for them commercially but you'd think next year they would have bid... or maybe the cricket is enough for them. Seven on theother hand have no premium sporting content in the AFL off season (besides supercars?)....

Great news. I enjoyed Ryan Phelan's passion last time around and hope he fronts the RLWC17 over that AFL buffon Jim Wilson. Nearly $10mil for TV rights, that's pretty impressive and imagine what the RLIF can do with that money!

Just tweeted Ian Maurice if he would be interested.

Hope they show the games live.

V8's are now on Foxtel.

A few rounds are still on FTA on 10 (Adelaide, Townsville, Sandown, Bathurst, Gold Coast and Sydney) but are also simulcast on Foxtel.

Aus v eng in melbourne a few days before the melbourne cup has become abit of a tradition....dunno about the MCG though...we've never troubled the capacity at AAMI in the past and we only got 36k when we got smashed at docklands in 2008...

I think a full AAMI would be fantastic....a half full MCG would look poor

I think England are due for the Ashes cricket series next year as well.

I remember they scheduled a Tri Nations match a few days before the Ashes and got over 40k at Brisbane.

Obviously the test in Melbourne is on boxing day, however if they due a schedule a game, either it'll be Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne, you would think they would schedule it near the Ashes series.

How many England supporters would be out here for the league and cricket?

Playing it at the MCG would be a great idea, but I have some concerns for crowds. Unless they really promote it down there. The Victorians do love their sport no matter what. With Meninga now the Kangaroos coach, a lot of Victorians, who sorta follow league but still refer it as "Rugby" know Mal quite well, cause he's a Queenslander, a legend of the game.

Apart from the Daily Terrograph, has anyone seen channel 7 announce this? News, social media, Sunrise? Would be interested.

The first Ashes test in 2013 in Brisbane started Nov 21.

This will be 3 weeks after Derby Day in Melbourne when they are talking about hosting this match..
