Just interested in what you think about how the Rugby League coverage will go this year on the ongoing disaster that is 9,under AFL Eddie and his AFL mates, also the cost cutting that is going on at 9.
There was an interview in our great benefactors NEWS ltd TV mag, with Eddie here in Perth, and he never mentioned NRL once, plenty to say about AFL and his plans for Monday night footy shows ect but not a word about the NRL, which if I am not mistaken is 9s major sport and only footy code for the next 5 years.
I dont know if I,m wrong but i just do not trust him or his cronies, interested in your thoughts:)

My heart sunk when I heard that Eddie had taken over channel 9.

It's going to be a long time before Eddie/Channel 9 pushes league in WA when they handle the game poorly in NSW, Qld and sadly Victoria!

Eddie doesn't control Nein in Perth (or Adelaide). PBL Media (ie. Packer and others) only owns the Nein affliliates in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin. The Perth affliate is owned by Sunraysia Television and the Adelaide affliate is owned by Southern Cross Broadcasting. Eddie has no control over what programs these affliates choose to show and the NRL has no contract with them.

But as part of the network agreement there is a very strong influence by Nine over what programs they show and do not show. If Nine wanted they could very easily write NRL into the network agreements.

I'd like their coverage more if they changed a few things. If they got rid of Phil Gould and that pointless try tracker, they'll be a lot better. Plus put Matt Johns in the commentary box, there's no point in having 3 sideline commentators.

It's more of a working relationship and I don't think Nein could very easily write it into the network agreements as it wouldn't suit either side to disagree over this. Nein Perth would lose content, Nein would lose represntation in the west which would cost them a sh*tload in advertising revenue.

I think it's really got to be a co-operative approach btw the NRL and Nein to meet with Nein Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide to try and see if there's some way we can get a commitment to screening regular primetime RL on those networks.

I have a distinct recollection (ie. I know for sure that I read this and noted it at the time) of newspaper reports in the lead-up to the last television deal that said the NRL would have the right to re-sell their rights to the ABC or SBS in Adelaide and Perth in the event that the local Nein affliate didn't pick them up. That provision didn't get a mention in the reports after the deal was done so I wonder if it ever made the cut? If it did I wonder what the trigger is? Is showing the match at 1am enough of a commitment from the Nein affliate to prevent the NRL from re-selling? Could we see a situation where SBS ends up showing AFL on Friday nights in Sydney and Brisbane and NRL in Adelaide and Perth. If so, you'd think we would have heard something more about this by now.

One suspects what is easy on an internet forum is actually very hard in reality when it is likely to cost one party hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars in advertising revenue.

I think what I have never liked with CH 9 is they use the same old tricks over and over. They only see the $$$ and honestly I do not feel they give a stuff about the grass roots of the game.

They would do well by getting a caller in who was similar to Simon Hill from the football coverage on SBS :)

Well it would cost the affiliate money, but if Nine wanted to play hard ball and insist on it then they could. It is more that they don't do it because it isn't in Nine's interest to do so.

If the NRL said, "yes we are selling you the exclusive national rights, but contingent on that is that it must be shown at a reasonable hour in all the mainland state capitals", then it becomes Nine's problem to work out a way to get that done. Likely it would cost Nine some money in lower network fees and consequently reduce the amount Nine would be willing to pay to the NRL. But it would be worth it.

Yeah, why are the SBS commentators all whores for the Football (sic) Federation of Australia?

Dear Quidgybo, 9 in Perth is an absolute joke, it runs last out of 3 commerical channels, 7 here beats them hands down, all the time it would be nice if the NRL onsold the games I will bet quids they dont also 9 Perth is controled by a woman named Eva who lives in SA.
My concern is with 9 and having an self confessed AFL lover as head,as I said in the interview Eddie never said anything about his plans for the NRL which is all they have,by the time they have finished cost cutting will there be a 9 worth watching

Unfortunately Nine can't even get that a lot of the time. There was a big blow up just recently because Nine WA is refusing to show the upcoming FINA Swimming Championships from Melbourne, despite Nine wanting this shown nationwide.

But equally the NRL could take the money it gets now from Nein Eddie and spend some of it buying advertising space on Nein Adelaide and Perth to make RL worth showing. The whole reason these stations don't show the game is because they belive it won't rate and so they won't be able to charge very much for the commercials. If the NRL buys the advertising space (and on sells where possible) then the ratings no longer matter, the affliates have the cash in hand. Same result as the above but without the middle man. Instead of "Friday Night Football brought to you by the new Holden Commodore", in Adelaide and Perth you'd get "Friday Night Football brought to you by the National Rugby League". It still leaves the NRL with less money in hand but instead of relying on Nein to work it out (and not screw us), the NRL does the deal directly.

Even if this arranagement is prohibitively expensive for the NRL to fund over a full season I still think it'd be more than justifable for the big events like the Grand Final.

From memory the ability of the NRL to be screened by the ABC or SBS outside of NSW/Qld/ACT was if the local channel did not start screening FNF prior to midnight, or immediately following the late news, whichever was earlier. Unfortunately I cannot recall if this applied just to Melbourne or if it also included Perth and Adelaide.

The distinct lack of advertising for the upcoming season hints at how channel nein take league for granted

Melbourne will get shafted by Len Downs and his cronies (who Eddie was heaping praise on in the article initially mentioned here) at Nein Melbourne...

I saw that article, and although I didn't read it, I skimmed over it to look for NRL, Rugby League, and a couple of other League associated names, ect. Like you said, not even once did Eddie Quagmire mention our sport. I have had my major doubts about him and his alliances since day 1. Nothing has changed.
