Melbourne will get shafted by Len Downs and his cronies (who Eddie was heaping praise on in the article initially mentioned here) at Nein Melbourne...

Nothing new there. RL doesn't rate in Melbourne. That's why we only got a bit over 900k watching the NRL GF.

The distinct lack of advertising for the upcoming season hints at how channel nein take league for granted

From memory the ability of the NRL to be screened by the ABC or SBS outside of NSW/Qld/ACT was if the local channel did not start screening FNF prior to midnight, or immediately following the late news, whichever was earlier. Unfortunately I cannot recall if this applied just to Melbourne or if it also included Perth and Adelaide.
I'm pretty sure it was Adelaide and Perth. I'd be surprised if it included Melbourne as that's a PBL Media owned station. It'd surely only apply to non-PBL owned Nein affliates - ie. those that don't have a contract with the NRL, aren't paying anything to the NRL, and so have no rights to keep the content excusively within their control.

High def absolutely rocks if you've got a big enough screen. I'm amazed there are countries with Digital TV that still don't produce all their major sports content in HD.

The only winter sport I have seen advertised is the afl, and they start after us. I for one dont understand why the NRL have not started the build up to the season with a bang. the only plausible explaination can be that 9 are waiting for the cricket season to end ??

I want High Definition like AFL will enjoy on ch 10

High Definition will supposedly be available by State of Origin, but on a ground by ground basis. Grounds that see a lot of NRL games, and games from other codes, will be upgraded. This list includes:

- Suncorp Stadium (Broncos, Origin, Reds, League & Union Tests, QLD Roar (maybe)

- Telstra Stadium (Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Tigers, Origin, Tests)

- Telstra Dome (AFL, Victory Games)

- MCG (AFL, Cricket)

Most likely once HD broadcasting has been mastered at these locations HD-equipped OB vans will be sent other smaller venues.

In the West today it stated that Ch9 WA will announce losses of $5mill for this year! They are moaning about having to pay a share of Ch9's outgoings for expensive sports. Would be a good time for the NRL to bung some money to get RL on in the West at a reasonable time as suggested.

Things aren't going to get any better for RL coverage here in Adelaide or Perth for that matter - PBL are negotiating to buy both stations to add to their Fourth Reich
