Unfortunately I doubt you'll get any response. I don't think anything will be done until the IC has been established.

Yeah probably, doesn't hirt to let them know what you think.

Here's what I wrote:

To: Channel 9 South Australia Pty Ltd
202 Tynte St
North Adelaide, South Australia, 5006

CC: David Gallop, CEO of the National Rugby League

GPO Box 3498

To Whom It May Concern:

Congratulations again on such poor coverage of the NATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE by placing it on at 12:30am and 2:30am Saturday 12 March and not at on all on Sunday 13 March.

I’d like to remind you that the NRL has the highest grossing TV viewers of any sport in the country, yet Channel 9 South Australia again fail to recognise this.

Your network’s commitment to the sport of Rugby League has been absolutely pathetic in the past and it is extremely disappointing that you will continue to do this in 2011. In 2010 you showed one live game of Rugby League in South Australia, and only three more delayed telecasts that were scheduled before midnight. You are effectively hindering any chance of people who support the game to watch at a reasonable hour and ultimately stopping the NRL from attracting new fans to the game. Give people in South Australia a right to choose to watch NRL rather than making that choice for them.

I ask that Channel 9 South Australia reconsider its position on when NRL games are scheduled. I can assure you that there will be a lot of support for the live coverage on Friday night and 4pm coverage on a Sunday as is the case in New South Wales and Queensland.

If Channel 9 South Australia continues with their current scheduling of NRL games I will be looking forward to the sale of the NRL TV rights for 2012 – 2016 and I sincerely hope that Channel 9 misses out in favour of a network that will give the sport the coverage and time slot that it truly deserves.

where can you find the ratings for shows on a Fri night and sunday afternoon, I'd love to keep track of the Perth ones.

http://www.tvtonight.com.au/category/ratings

They list the the days top 50 nationwide + the figures for selected other shows. They list the individual ratings for the shows in each city.

Last nights ratings

Live Footy - Sydney - 416,000 ; Brisbane - 331,000
Lake House - Melbourne - 114,000 ; Adelaide - 48,000 ; Perth - 55,000

2nd Footy - Sydney 241,000 ; Brisbane - 148,000
Chances Are didn't make the list, so can't see the viewership. But it will be very low.

Once again #1 in both markets and doubles 9's lead in.

On Gem/Go in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth could've pulled in around another 150k at 7:30pm.

Don't worry about him. He's just a Sydney-centric trashbag.

He'd have games played at Pratten Park in his perfect world...and an all-suburban Sydney comp.
Yeah right - and never be able to get to a game.

You are just pissed off that your dream of NO games in Sydney will never be realised.

Von, sorry, but the Rugby League featuring non Victorian teams would not out rate the Lake House in Melbourne. It would be on a par with the Cybill Shepherd one though given the same time slot of 10.30pm

Channel 9 do this because Channel 9 in Melbourne is run by the AFL, or people deeply involved in AFL and they don't want competition. Even if that competition is never going to challenge their own code. They want to bury NRL not assist it. Unless forced they wont change their attitude.

The NRL has to tell Channel 9 that if they wont show it in earlier slots that they will lose it come the next negotiation. Channel 9 in NSW and QLD have the right to bid for the rights, but the NRL will split it for broadcasting in non League states by 7 or 10. See how Nine react to that.

In NSW the AFL is shown on free to air tv starting sometime after 11pm when the 2nd game of league is coming to a close or has ended.

In Victoria the same should happen with the league. The AFL has Friday Night Football that ends at around 11.30pm - that's when the NRL should be showing with some level of cross over given consideration in case the AFL game is a complete blow out and viewers are switching off. Starting at 11pm and going to 12.30 for the first game for example.

Commercial TV cant show league in Victoria against the AFL and hope to rate, but it can be shown earlier than it currently is.

This.

It isn't C9's broadcasting schedule thats the problem so much as the laws stopping Poxtel broadcasting these games in these time slots instead. In Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, they may as well show a test pattern as run RL against AFL. Yes, we get AFL shown on 10 at better hours, but rarely does it go up against FNF.

Besides, C10's programming strength is it's dramas - weeknight TV. It makes sweet FA from weekends, which is partly how it gets away with AFL on weekends. These days don't rate as well, and face it, AFL isn't as savvy at showing it's game in prime time, unlike us. the GF (especially before 2008), Origin, MNF and FNF are all scheduled to cash in on big TV audiences. The balance is that these audiences don't exist in AFL states.

So league fans in these states need to think like Premier League fans do. Look to Pay TV.

Anyway, all the people claiming that the Storm are responsible for massive amounts of subscriptions suggest that you already do, and it's a non issue, regardless of what Ribot-esque thinkers like Brutus will tell you.

Throw this into the mix:

15 2011 NAB Cup: Grand Final: Essendon V Collingwood Seven 556,000 (National) 12,000 (Syd) 409,000 (Melb)1,000 (Bris) 84,0009(Perth) 50,000 (Adel)

12k in Sydney and 1 k in Brisbane. Proves that showing foreign footy prime time works in new markets.

C9 will say that their strategy works for them. Hard to argue against.

Again, go to your Pay TV network and whinge at them.

Guys, just face the facts:

PBL (free-to-air broadcaster) and News Ltd (half owners of the NRL) are part owners of Foxtel with Telstra, the NRL's major sponsor and holder of new media rights (for $0.00).

Throw in the fact that the Victorian branch of channel 9 is FULL of people with links to AFL (be it club managers, ex AFL lawyers, AFL executives), is it any wonder they continually try to f*** our game over outside NSW and Qld?

They don't want us watching on free-to-air outside NSW/Qld because it drives PayTV subscriptions / viewership, and AFL people involved at 9 see it as a rival for AFL.

We won't get a fair go until:

* the ARL Commission,
* the Anti Siphoning laws to take effect, and
* negotiations to begin for 2013 onwards

It is sh!t, and it won't change unless the NRL makes it change. If you want to do something about this issue, write to

Interesting that writing to the NRL only comes fourth on your list. Wouldn't that seem to indicate that it's not solely within the NRL's control to "make it change" if we have to write to all these other powers first? Perhaps what the NRL is doing to try to change things is lobbying and negotiating with these very same organisations. Just as you suggest he rest of us should do.
