Maybe in the finals, when we don't have a good enough 17 to be competitive

A great example is the Sharks game, which was one of the very few games of playoffs quality this season. Jonathan Plod dropped it cold with a try begging.

Later on this year it could be Gubb rushing up randomly and creating a huge defensive hole, or the ball coming to Thomas on the 5th tackle and he dying with the football. They really are just passengers, they do enough to not disgrace themselves but they won't get you anywhere. Reminds me of when we lost JRo in 07 and needed Tony Martin to fill in, and the Cowboys ran rings all around him.

Nope.

Slater's good deed was recent.

Gavet's been at it a while
Nothing but respect for Gavet. I know a lot of the team like to play the PlayStation and club on Tuesday's so it's good to see someone doing something different. Nice.

Yep, those guys are great to have around the club. One of the reasons Matagi was great too. Side note, I'd throw a 2nd tier deal at Matagi if he didn't have any offers for next year. Just a quality addition as a clubman (and a handy backup, so long as we understand that is what he is).

Not to say he should be in the first grade side, unless he earns it on field though (of course), which he hasn't (except maybe over Gubb).

He's getting a lot of football at the Panthers this year.

Yeah, I'd put that down to injury, lack of middle forward depth and Anthony Griffin.. he's one of the few coaches in the NRL right now I like less than Cappy - I remember being absolutely bewildered when he turned out to be the guy they sacked Ivan for. They only reason I can think for bringing him in is that he's happy to blood lots of kids, and Penrith have a crazy generation coming through.

They signed Grevsmuhl mid year and Tamou for next year, so I don't think Matagi's getting much game time (if he gets a contract there) in 2017.

Matagi in general is a weird one.. he seems to play best when given a certain range of minutes (roughly 25-35), but once he's playing minutes out of that range his performances drop off dramatically.

Now I'm not sure what Gubb's position is, whether he's a prop or a back-rower...but aren't we better served getting game time and experience into Sipley? Doesn't he have SO much more upside? I know the argument would be that Sipley has a few missed tackles and errors in his game, and doesn't play big minutes at all. But isn't that where Gubb was 2 months ago? We've got this guy who can really hurt the other team's D line (channeling my inner Daryl Halligan) and has the potential to be great. Gubb, I think we all get is a journeyman/role player at best. Sipley isn't going to get much better or fitter playing ressies. He needs exposure, and in a side with Matulino/Jake etc around him seems a good time. When Vete comes back in, no problem if he drops out. But for Gubb? I don't see the short or long term pay-off (minus this magical energy and motivation Charlie apparently gives us)

Pretty much the premise of this thread.

If Afoa plays then I guess that'll be his role- but if he doesn't then yeah I agree, either he or Sipley should be getting exposure.

If only Gubb played well enough to justify a 5 page thread about him!!

Gubb is a quasi-front rower, quasi back-rower, quasi impact player...he seems to have all that going for him, so he is an automatic selection for some reason.

Gubbs lucky Vete is injured. I reckon he'd be dropped otherwise.
Don't think so, McFadden obviously likes him. Kata came good (although his potential was more apparent). In Cappy we trust??

Gubb is a laugh. I asked him about why he always goes for his "grass cutter" tackles when I met the team a few weeks ago and he didn't seem to even know what I was talking about... :p.
