Chelsea make 'huge' offer for Samuel

Chelsea have made a 'huge' offer to lure centre-back Walter Samuel away from Roma, according to the player's agent.
The Argentinian, rated as one of the world's best defenders, would be an ideal replacement for the ageing Blues captain Marcel Desailly and could be set to join compatriots Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernan Crespo at Stamford Bridge.


'Chelsea have made a big offer that Roma are considering,' Samuel's advisor Abel Balbo told The Guardian.

The player's agent Raul Oliveros added: 'Chelsea's offer is huge and will be impossible for both the player and Roma to refuse.

Samuel, who is contracted to the Serie A club until 2006, last week admitted he was tempted by the prospect of playing in the Premier League and is likely to cost at least £15million - although money is no object to Chelsea's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

To be honest, I don't even think we would need one of those.
Crespo, may get comfortable if given a chance and doesn't have a bad strike rate at Chelsea as it is. Gudjhonsen has really started playing well this season and along with Forsell (when he eventually comes back) will be the future of the club in terms of strikers. Also, we still have Mutu, who on his day can be brilliant. that's not to mention the potential service that we could be getting from people like Duff, Lampard, Veron, Cole, etc. I think as long as we're safe enough at the back, we can win anything.

Walter Samuel would be the best purchase we could attain over the off-season. He'd push Gallas onto the bench, but it would be well worth grabbing the best defender from the grittiest league in the world. The sound of a Samuel/Terry defensive duo already brings shivers to my spine! :twisted:

I personally believe that Crespo is the most expendible striker we have. Gudjohnson is value for money. Hasselbaink is our goal poacher. Mutu will come very very good in time. And Forrsell is the way of the future. Crespo receives outrageous wages and for what he does is not worth squat all.

With Arjian Robben coming in, I'd like to see the club dig into the market for another poacher! We have the link strikers in Gudjohson and Mutu, we just need another finisher.
