CHILE HOT FOR RUGBY LEAGUE
Chile has expressed an interest in playing Rugby League with contacts being made with the Rugby League International Federation.
Adrian Barraza from SPT Sports Marketing and Management lives in Santiago, the capital of Chile. He believes that his country, which has a population of 16 million, would be popular amongst its people..
Barraza has requested that promotional material be sent to Chile in order to help with coaching and getting people aware of the game.
The major sports in Chile are organised by a federation which is composed of three regional associations and these must be formed by at least three clubs. All the federations are affiliated to the Olympic Commitee including those that are not included as Olympic sports.
Barraza is confident that Rugby League would be successful in Chile because much of the population is excluded from team sports.
"The great thing about this is that we are having nations knocking on our door wanting to play Rugby League. This year alone, we have ibterest from Greece, Argentina, India and now Chile" said Rugby League International Federation Development Officer Tas Baitieri.
"Instead of us taking Rugby League to these countries to try and spred the gospel, thes countries are getting things done themselves. We will help however possible but these nations must eventually be self-funded."
