Even if Brown ends up staying at the Eels (I think most likely)
IF the reports are accurate ( Big IF ) then it is unlikely he'd stay at the Eels unless he is one of the most loyal players in history.

The Eels arent budging on the current contract, which means Brown would lose 6 million to stay at Parra.

Whilst I prefer him at 6 I don’t hate the idea of Brown at 7 IF we come up with a suitable game plan for it to work. We can’t expect him to become a player that he’s not.

I’ve heard the media laughing at us a bit for coming across as “desperate”, but I don’t really see what we have to lose by putting all our cards on the table and seeing what happens.
I guess the half glass empty view is that other managers can try to take advantage of us if we're vocal about our willingness to pay Brown 1.3M or whatever, but I suppose it's up to us to stick to our guns.

1.3 million a year for Brown is salary cap destroying overs but a Ponga/Sharpe/Brown/Crossland or Arthur spine could be lethal as f**k.
Yeah, that's it, I don't think Brown is a bad player at all and I can understand why fans want us to take the risk after so many years of mediocrity, but I hope we don't - not at 10 years anyway. You can hack overpaying for someone if it's a shorter contract.

Yeah if no Brown you’re basically praying that Sharpe and probably Arthur too are good enough that he looks at Jack Cogger or whichever other competent systems halfback we end up with instead and says “yep all we need is this guy to steer us around and Fletch, Matt and I can do the rest.”

I don’t know about that. He’s got a lot of self belief so maybe he’d think, all I need is to be put in good positions. I wouldn’t bet my house on it though.

Not necessarily. To me when POS said “Brown or a player like Brown” is needed to take us to the next level, it tells me that if Brown doesn’t come he’ll keep searching. The one good thing about the club being so vocal about it is that if a good half isn’t happy at their club or with their contract, their managers know we’ve got money to splash.

FTR I think Sharpe has unlimited potential and a very good chance he reaches or surpasses Brown, but it seems the club is thinking of a Brown like player in addition to Sharpe, not instead of him.

If we did sign Brown and put him at 7 though, AOB would have to be prepared to completely throw the conservative “5 hit ups and a bomb” bullshit completely out the window. You can’t play that style with a spine of Ponga, Sharpe and Brown. You have to just be prepared for some unorganised chaos. I know Brown flopped at 7 last year, but I think it’s because the Eels were trying to get him play like Moses, and he just isn’t that type of player. Also their defence being horrendous obviously played into that but conceding that many points week on week can’t be blamed purely on your half.

Hynes to Sharks, Latrell to Souths. What’s the difference? Big name available so a club who needs a position filled makes a big money play.
+ they say we're "having to let go Elliot, Hetherington, Brailey, Hastings". - In fact they just wont be re-signed, and would most likely be let go regardless of an offer to Brown.

"Knights are losing more than they're signing" - In fact the Knights have one of the more settled rosters in the comp, and wont be re-signing some poor contracts in order to promote juniors at a better cap return.

I think most of what was said in that clip was spot on. I doubt that a 10 year deal is what we really want to be offering but how many chances are we going to get to bring a player of Brown’s calibre to the club. Most of them are locked into long term deals already, or are at the best clubs so they’re unlikely to leave, or are on the verge of retirement (e.g. DCE) so simply put, this feels like a chance we can’t pass up.

I don’t agree with the “desperate club” part of it though. To me it’s a clear statement that we want to win a comp. Nothing more, nothing less. Also it should help with retaining KP because he will see the lengths the club has gone to so that we can put a winning roster together and will want to play with Brown.

I assume at this point Brown’s management is waiting for the Eels to make a counter offer?

it's only "desperate" because it is the Knights. If it were the Roosters it would be an astute signing by a club that "challenges for the Premiership every year"

The Knights media team can get ahead of this type of narrative though, it is one of the attributes I admire about the Roosters. Their spin, their marketing of the brand is second to none.

Is he worth $1.3 a year for a team like us? Definitely. Is 10 years a risky gamble? Definitely. Desperate for success? Definitely.

Let's get it done!!!
