I know his not full Chinese but Alex Chan is a big robust front row forward. Another who might be of Chinese heritage is Joe Sang-Yum of Penrith Premier League who happens to play 2nd row. Also another part Chinese forward who played in the QLD Cup last year had a surname of Chong-Nee. A Chinese forward pack might not be as lightweight as you think.

Ummm look at the asian players in the american gridon they are freakin huge! and I've seen plenty of "tanky asians" at Sydney Uni they are Japanese rugby union players out here for some sort of scholarship program (which the NRL should take note of, if they are serious about promoting international footy) just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover.

We need to remember that forwards only need be around 100 Kg these days and plenty of Chinese are that size, that are not as small as japanese but even then many japanese are now tall.

China would be a great country to get into. Especiallly if it is backed by business. Get it in the army get it in Uni's and schools.

Sang-Yum has caught my eyes in the last couple of months...some talent there!
Anyone know if the Newcastle Knights' Win Wun Soon is of Chinese heritage?

thommo can you fill us all in a little bit more?

I will tell you as much as I can without betraying the trsut that was placed in me.
A very powerful Chinese Businessman has approached certain people involved in our game and asked for assistance in getting "Rugby League" started domestically in China.
They are looking at getting a 6-8 team domestic comp going, in the not too distant future.
Trust me there is a lot more then just this, this is the best I can do for now, but guys I promise you not, this is no lie, and I have seen the plans and proposals that were being drawn up.
The Chinese Businessman owns a massive company in China, and was recently in Australia(when I say recently, I mean he was here for work purposes for a few years), and got to see some League games while out here and loved it.

I hope this has been of some help to all of you. Sorry I can't give further information, as soon as I can I will.
You're the best at keeping secrets. You'd last 2 seconds if you worked at my work place.

Mate what have I told you really?
You don't know names or people involved, I haven't mentioned that part, and I have kept this inside for quite a long period of time. People who matter know about this so it's secrecy won't remain for much longer anyway.
There are a lot more important details I haven't told you, the part I have relayed on is ok to talk about.

I'm not a racist person (dsclaimer)
but

when i was playing schoolboy footy I was a winger. The only time i ever saw a chinese kid was on the wing.

They were usually impossibly fast but couldn't tackle, couldnt catch a bomb and would snap like a twig when you hit em.

That is simply my experience of chinese players.

Now a couple years ago I had an indian bloke on my team

AHAHAHAHA

FMD india will NEVER EVER play rugby league!

Indian RL? You should see some of these kabbadi players, or the Indian strong men, they're massive and bloody strong!

There's a billion of 'em too but I guess the 'rugby playing set' in India would be more public school rah rah than the most true blue Etonians! They'd never soil themselves with TGG.....

brendothejet,

Actually there are quite a lot of RL playing asians in Britain. Ikram Butt played for england in the mid-nineties, and is still involved in development work in the Bradford area. A team called the South Asia Bulls was set up and they play in 7's & 9's tournaments. They also went to India a couple of years ago to play in a rah-rah comp. Their celebrations included a rendition of 'Yorkshire, yorkshire, Yorkshire.'

Also an asian girl plays for GB Women.

In the UK 91% of the populaton is white.
In London this falls to 65%.
In London Junior RL something like 60% of the kids playing are non-white.

I imagine that most of the non-whites playing in London would be of Caribbean or African origin, like the Harlequins' Congo born forward Joe Mbu.

The one person of part-Asian origin in the NRL is Craig Wing --- whose mother is Filipina and who father Alan is Caucasian. Craig is a small man who has worked hard to build up his physique.

You're not racist, not deliberately anyway.

Do you realise just how ridiculous your comments are? You just put more than 2 billion people into the same basket, just because you saw a handful of unskilled players in a local comp.

Yeah mate, Ikram Butt never played for England, Yao Ming never played in the NBA and Shaolin Monks snap like twigs.

Most of the non-whites playing RL in London are black, but there are a number of asians and arabs as well. Two asian brothers were in the London U-18's a couple of years back.

In the NSWRL Junior Reps (SG Ball and Harold Matthews in 06) we have:
Manly (1), South Sydney (1), Eastern Suburbs (1), Western Suburbs (1).

So 4, whilst not many, especially compared to say Australians, Kiwis, Scottish, English and Irish players in the competition, it shows there are some in the league who have some talent and are coming up through the ranks.

I've played against a Chinese kid...The most agile player I've ever played against. There would certainly be some talent in a Chinese team.

Is this thread a joke or what?

Hand on heart do you really think China will start playing TGG?

And for those of you who are clutching at straws by mentioning anyone who looks slightly Asain or MIGHT be of Chinese lineage (Sing & Lam) need to get a serious grip! That is like saying anyone who is black should play for Jamaica!

And without wanting to open a whole debate what you are putting forward is an Australian based team, shouldn't we be getting Asians invloved with the Australian set up if this is where they were born, live and work?

I don't mean to knock RL expansion but get a reality check. The sports played in China include basketball, football, badminton, ping pong and volleyball and couldn't give a toss about RL or union apart for tiny expat numbers.
