Colourful Sydney Roosters winger Chris Walker was last night given permission to negotiate with rival clubs after he was dropped to premier league.
The 25-year-old veteran of six Origin games for Queensland is awaiting a letter confirming the decision of coach Ricky Stuart that he need not wait until the June 30 anti-tampering deadline to test his value on the market.
"I met Ricky today and he said that Chris does have permission to go out there and talk to clubs," said Walker's co-manager, Gavin Orr. "But I'm going to wait until I have it in writing."
The effervescent three-quarter has polarised fans since walking out on South Sydney to join their wealthy neighbours mid-season in 2003. He initially played for match payments only before an upgrade but is off contract this year.
So far in 2005, he has been in and out of first grade and was dropped following Saturday night's loss to North Queensland. Contacted last night, Walker said he preferred not to comment.
Roosters CEO Brian Canavan said: "There was a general discussion about Chris's future and there was a request from his management for him to negotiate with other clubs. We will consider that over the next few days."
I just wonder how many contenders, as opposed to pretenders, will bid for him. The ESL beckons.
