Christian set for Hobart squad

REDBACKS allrounder Daniel Christian is set to make a sensational rise to the Test side in Hobart this week.

South Australia's in-form Mr Fixit is Australia's cover for Queensland quick Ben Cutting, who was sidelined for up to two months yesterday with a side strain during the Bulls' Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria.

Christian, 28, was not part of the South Australian side that left Adelaide Airport yesterday for the Sheffield Shield match with Western Australia at the WACA, starting tomorrow.

It is understood Christian - who is known to be favoured by former SACA director of high performance and new Australian selector Rod Marsh - was alerted to his Test elevation on the way to the airport yesterday.

Instead, he is now booked on a flight to Hobart on Tuesday where he will join the Australian side - and is likely to become the 427th player to wear the baggy green cap.

Christian's rise from grade cricketer four years ago to Test hopeful this week comes on the strength of a superb 2011/12 season.

He has scored 475 runs at 59.4 since jumping to the No. 6 batting position for the Redbacks this summer, and taken 10 wickets at 49.7 with his lively medium-fast attack.

His tally includes two centuries and a 96 for South Australia so far.

Christian has played three Twenty20 Internationals for Australia but batted only once.

In Brisbane yesterday, New Zealand went to stumps at 1/10, trailing Australia by 122 runs.

Replace cutting with a batting all rounder (average bowler even if in great form with the bat).

Cuttling isn't 12th man in this game. There's some random QLD ranga carrying the drinks. I can't see why they can't do the same in Tasmania

well they seem to let the 12th man go back to state cricket now days so maybe Christian will be on another plane next week

Just like the obsession with a left arm bowler we got one for an all rounder. Well I hope it is because I don't want to see half a season worth of form overtaking an overall average of 30.

Christian is a good option if we are after a number 6 who can bowl 15 overs a day. Would have thought Faulkner looks the better option but oh well they are rewarding form.

Warner or Hughes could be on their toes, Christian is obviously sort of a stand in for Watson but would likely bet 6 and everyone would move up one. I think it is a good selection.

He'll get a trip to Tassie, some nice new Australian training gear and then another flight back to play for SA.

Christian is not as bad as he made out to be IMO however I doubt his bowling is of test standard if he were to ever play it should not be as a genuine all rounder but more in the batter who can bowl better than Hussey role, kind of like Kiwis like Ryder and Oram

Hughes looked pretty damn shaky. He could miss out and Christian could end up at 7.

Australia's selection hierarchy has declared its confidence in beleaguered opener Phillip Hughes by confirming it will field an unchanged team in tomorrow's second Test against New Zealand in Hobart.
Captain Michael Clarke said the plentiful spread of grass on the Bellerive Oval pitch had persuaded him - and seemingly other selectors Mickey Arthur and John Inverarity too - that Australia's frontline bowlers should not require the help of a fifth legitimate bowler to bowl the Black Caps out twice.

AUSTRALIA: Michael Clarke (c), David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon. 12th: Daniel Christian.
