CJ's Thought

OK, I haven't done this in a few weeks. And contrary to what it may seem, I am not just posting this thread when we win a game. Been back and forth to Sydney and Toowoomba the past week...

1. Kurt Gidley: Has to be in Origin consideration doesn't he? His goalkicking seems to be improving, which is good to see. Hoping he can bring his average up to a 75+% record... as long as it's better than Cameron Smith's 63%:sarcasm:

2. James McManus: His youth showed in a couple of simple mistakes, needs to focus on basic discipline. Doesn't need to get too carried away trying to return the ball like Slater or Bowen.

3. George Carmont: Actually made one good run through the middle carrying 3 defenders toward the line (couldn't believe my eyes)... then dropped the ball trying to play it.

4. Todd Polglase: Although named at centre played a fair bit of wing. A very good fill-in, and he made some impressive tackles.

5. Brad Tighe: I won't be too hard on the bloke. After making 2 errors and giving away a stupid penalty in the first 10 minutes, it showed alot of guts to work his confidence back up and have a go.

6. Daniel Abraham: He didn't seem to get as involved as he has in previous weeks. But still a very solid performance.

7. Jarrod Mullen: His kicking game (particularly his cross-field kicks to the wingers) really improved this week. If McManus had been able to hold on to one of them we would have had another try.

8. Josh Perry: Didn't carry the ball too much, but a couple of his runs were pretty classy. At least twice he carried 3 blokes for 10m. Still needs to learn how to hit the line with speed.

9. Danny Buderus: Does he need any more accolades? When he was off the field we looked lost...:?

10. Cory Paterson: Starting him at prop was a nice little couterpunch by Smith. But I still think he suits the second-row.

11. Steve Simpson: We are going to miss his leadership next week (maybe he will be able to back-up). Played alot of minutes so didn't have the impact he usually does, but a soild all-round performance.

12. Clint Newton: Was a bit disappointed in him this week. Didn't seem to get to involved (or maybe that's just me), but after playing prop last week I expected more go-forward.

13. Dan Tolar: Seems to be making the lock position his own. Tackles the house down and really adds that extra dimesion to the backrow.

14. Adam Woolnough: Looked good starting from the bench (144 meters), played plenty of minutes it seemed. Some solid hitups and really dug deep in that second half when the heat started to take effect.

15/16. Kirk Reynoldson/Riley Brown: I combined them because niether really did anything off the bench. The quality of Riley's passing at dummy-half is not up to scratch IMO, and Reyno was his usual 2-error, 3 missed tackle self.

17. Matt White: Really impressive off the bench (although not to the the extent Wooly was). Knows how to hit the line with speed (unlike a certain sponge I know...).

I tohught Daniels lack of pace was evident from scrum plays when Peachy ran at him. He is a back rower, so he is hardly at fault, but Peachy ambled outside him a number of times.

Great call on Browns passing from dummy half. Seu Seu certainly concedes some silly penalties, but his ball delivery is first class in both directions.

While we again conceded a stack of points, considering what little ball we had in the first half, I thought our defence was great.

On the ladder, our for and against looks dreadful, but in my mind, given how scrappy our play has been, I think our defence has been first class.

Brown is seriously out of match practice.

Abraham is proving how versatile he is, but i think all our backs are looking bad because they are not getting decent ball to play with. Mullen is not setting up play like Joey, and Abraham is certainly not helping.

I think we either need Dureau and Mullen in the halves or Mullen and Hunt - Karawana is good in patches but inexplicably goes missing in action.

Newton i thought had an awesome game, he came off with a sternum injury and when he came back on he ran it harder than anyone. I think White was great, i like to c him run the ball to the line as fast as he can, looks in great form, and Mullen's kicking game was alot better than in previous weeks.

i too agree with cj's thoughts on browns passing out of dummy half.. it was dead set terrible. i also found that when seu seu was in for buderus in rounds 1->3 he was flat-footing the forwards with a lot of his passing game.. could have just been miscommunication but neither of them are anywhere near the standard of buderus.

can't argue with any of the rest.. mullens kicking game was a lot better.. although he tends to go for the cross field bomb to mcmanus a little too often.. would like to see him mix it up a bit more (the one time he did grubber through to a flying kidley we scored a try).

roops keeps plugging dureau.. and it has me intrigued.. wanna see the kid play (i'm in the same boat with uate and snowden.. and havent seen franze this year yet either).

Scott is a talent.

Does roopy see some of A.Johns in him? Might be just that he carries his 'weight' in a similar way......

I don't see any A Johns in him - but i see a little of A Johns in Joel Brown - if only the kid could kick.

Dureau is still the worst defender to make it to PL in a long time.

The fact that every time he went for a big hit in the juniors he popped his shoulder means he very rarely does more than shirt grab. If he can get confidence in his shoulder and go hard in defence when he has to and he will be a really good firstgrader.

His brother, Luke, had a very slim build, which was probably why he never made it. He had a wonderful football brain - maybe even better than Scott.

yeah i agree with perserve
Brown and Seu Seu just make me value Buderus that much more as a hooker
great service to our forwards, and good choices in dummy half running

but overall pretty good

I'd say Mullen has been practicing those cross-field bombs all week considering he had some woeful attempts the week before vs. Storm. But I too would like to see Mullen develop a Lockyer/Hunt Cronk/Slater type of understanding with Kidley. We might have caught a glimpse of this when Kidley scored under the posts from a Mullen grubber (which Peachy spilled).

Sargent must be close to returning... Brown could find himself the odd one out after that display. Kidley is more than capable of covering for Bedsy if he needs a rest.
